Jets Fan-Favorite Starter Bluntly Put on Notice Ahead of Preseason

Ahead of the New York Jets’ preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers, the team released its unofficial first depth chart.

Joe Tippmann was listed as the starting center. Jets beat reporter Nick Faria of Jets X-Factor told me on “Boy Green Daily” that it means “absolutely nothing.”

Faria revealed that Tippmann and newcomer Josh Myers have been “splitting reps in practice,” and the competition is “more neck-and-neck than even we realize.”

“It’s kind of dead even. They aren’t really giving one [more] rep to that person or one [less] rep to that person. They are both splitting different days, and that’s a clear sign that they want to have this as a competition. I’m not really sure what’s going to happen,” Faria admitted to me.

“A big question mark there,” Faria added. “It’s a lot closer than I think most people anticipated.”

Head Coach Aaron Glenn Talks About Competition

“That is one of the battles that I’m really enjoying. I think everybody understands like the battles that we have as far as positions are concerned. Both of those men are smart, and they have picked this offense up fairly quickly. They’re both tough and physical. They both do a really good job of helping Justin [Fields] when it comes to mike points and things like that because they understand and know it just like Justin does,” head coach Aaron Glenn explained on Monday, August 4.

“It is a fierce fierce battle, and I actually want it to be that way just across the board. I’ve said this before: elite athletes thrive on competition. It is showing up with those two men. I think they’re playing their [expletives] off right now. In regards to the situation, I know we have two really good players at that spot that is going to do a good job for us this year,” Glenn added.

A media member followed up by asking if Coach Glenn will need to see the entirety of the preseason to decide that competition.

“Well, I can’t say that. We will let that roll like it needs to roll. I’ll tell you what, I’m enjoying how those guys are going out battling,” Glenn responded.

Glenn Makes Final Call on Several Injured Jets Ahead of Packers Game

On Monday, August 4, Glenn was ready to rule out several Jets players for the preseason opener.

That list included: starting left guard John Simpson (back), starting defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf), and backups Xavier Gipson (shoulder) and Kris Boyd (shoulder).

Boyd was carted off the field during the team’s green and white scrimmage over the weekend. The talented special teamer was cited as having been in considerable visible pain after suffering his injury.

The Jets open up their preseason schedule on the road against the Packers on Saturday, August 9. Glenn did not reveal whether or not any of his starters would play in the game. He said that information will be shared later in the week.
