Jets HC Aaron Glenn Sends Cryptic Message on QB Situation After Justin Fields Benching

The New York Jets quarterback position is in flux, and Aaron Glenn doesn’t have any answers about it — at least not yet.

The Jets head coach made a cryptic statement about their QB spot after they benched Justin Fields for Tyrod Taylor in their 13-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

The Jets have not scored a touchdown in consecutive weeks, and their offense has mustered just five field-goal drives in that span. Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract to be New York’s starter this off-season, has just 845 passing yards and four touchdowns while also posting about 43 rushing yards per game.

The Jets (0-7) will go on the road to take on the Cincinnati Bengals (3-4) on Sunday.

Aaron Glenn Doesn’t ‘Want To Make Rash Decisions’ With The Jets’ Starting QB Spot

Glenn was asked Monday if he had a decision made — or in mind — about his QB spot for the Bengals game.

“It’s early on Monday,” Glenn said when asked. “There’s a lot of thought that goes into [who is the quarterback] for me personally.

“I’m not running away from the question at all. I want to make sure I make the right decision, and I don’t want to make rash decisions either.”

Part of what Glenn, and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, have to mull is the fact Taylor was not much better than Fields on Sunday. The duo combined for just 220 offensive yards, and Taylor went 10 for 22 with two interceptions to Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn after replacing Fields.

But even though the Jets do not have a win, and neither Fields nor Taylor played well enough to steal a winnable game against Carolina, Glenn has a winning mentality in mind when deciding who the starter will be.

“It’s always based on who gives you the best chance to win,” Fields said of making his quarterback decision. “This is a week-to-week league, and you have to make sure you get yourself prepared to win every week because every [opponent] gives you different challenges.

“My mindset is who gives us the best chance to win, to be honest with you.”

Starting Tyrod Taylor Over Justin Fields Could Be A Disaster For The Jets

Fields is still months away from his 27th birthday but has now been benched in consecutive seasons — after his development was cut off at the knees when the Chicago Bears opted to trade him to Pittsburgh and select Caleb Williams with the first pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.

So the decision to replace Fields with Taylor — a veteran journeyman who is 36 years old, playing for his seventh team and has just six starts over the past four seasons — could have a huge impact on the organization.

Taylor is only signed through this year at about $6 million, whereas Fields could have a double-digit-million-dollar dead-cap hit for next year if he is released.

Glenn seems to understand that, which is why he is taking his time to announce his Week 8 starter.

“I just want to make sure that when the decision is made, it’ll be the right one,” Glenn said. “You guys will know that real soon.”
