Twice in their first three games, the New York Jets have witnessed defeat be snatched from the jaws of victory. Two-point losses in Weeks 1 and 3 hurt, especially when sandwiching a 20-point blowout Week 2 shortcoming.
At a certain point, a team is what its record is. Glenn doesn’t believe this is the same old Jets squad, however, and he’s trying to show it with his intensity on the field.
Despite dropping one to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday, it brought the best moment of the young New York season. A late-game blocked field goal saw Glenn celebrate in epic fashion, which generated mixed reviews.
Aaron Glenn Puts Emotion Simply: ‘Always Be Me’
Speaking to the media ahead of Week 4’s contest against the Miami Dolphins, Glenn responded to any looming criticism.
The first-time head coach is embracing himself, as he believes that raw emotion and authenticity sets a good example for his players.
“Here’s what I do know: I’m always going to be me,” Glenn said. “Listen, these guys need someone that’s going to show they believe in them and that’s going to show they’re proud of [them] when they make plays. If I probably didn’t do that, my wife and kids would’ve said, ‘What’s happening? What’s going on with you?’ I’m glad that I’m never going to be fake. I’m going to always be me. Some people like it, some people don’t. It doesn’t matter. I’m glad that people can see me, my authentic self, no matter what.”
Glenn, like many others, knows there’s no playbook for being the leader of an NFL franchise.
“I don’t know what it means, because someone said, ‘Is a head coach supposed to act like that?’” Glenn said. “How is a head coach supposed to act? I don’t know, but it was good. It was good.”
If you’re going to be winless, you might as well do it while trying hard. Glenn’s realness-over-all approach undoubtedly is a positive one, even with the team’s results not showing it.
Glenn Compares Jets’ Near-Comeback to Famous ‘Monday Night Miracle’
It’s hard to disagree with Glenn’s choice, given the magnitude of the moment.
According to advanced box score data from rbsdm.com, the Will McDonald IV block of Chase McLaughlin‘s kick was the most impactful play of the game. It cost the Buccaneers 9.3 expected points added and dropped their win probability from 98% to 62%. While quarterback Baker Mayfield wound up leading a game-winning field goal drive on the next possession, it’s remarkable that the Jets even clawed their way back into the outing.
Glenn loosely compared the near-comeback from down 23-6 to a 2000 contest he was a player for. The famous “Monday Night Miracle” between these very Jets and the Dolphins saw Gang Green hang a staggering 30 points in the fourth quarter. They went on to add a field goal in overtime, completing one of football’s most historic feats ever.
That same type of fight shined through in Week 3, Glenn believes.
“It’s very similar to what we did this past week against Tampa, by giving ourself a chance,” Glenn said. “That’s what I’m so proud of about this team. If you have the ability to be able to do that, man, you’re headed in the right direction. That’s why I made the statement that these guys are not the same old Jets. These guys are a bunch of guys that want to win. They’re starting to understand exactly how to win — we just have to do a better job of getting over that hump and winning these games. I know as we continue to progress through this season, those guys will do a good job of that.”
Given the hole the Jets have dug themselves into, they’ll need to keep displaying heart for the rest of the 2025-26 campaign.
