Jets’ HC Weighs In On Braelon Allen Surgery, ‘I’m Not Making That Decision’

The longer removed we become from Braelon Allen’s knee injury suffered on Monday Night Football, the worse the news gets. The New York Jets’ running back was placed on injured reserve yesterday as it became apparent that the injury was a significant one.

Now full details have arrived on what is being called an MCL injury.

New York Jets running back Braelon Allen, placed on injured reserve Thursday with a knee injury, will be sidelined eight to 12 weeks, coach Aaron Glenn said Friday,” writes Rich Cimini for ESPN. “Allen, hurt while returning a kickoff on Monday night, is deciding whether to have surgery on what is believed to be an MCL injury.”

As far as surgery is concerned, the head coach went out of his way to confirm that he would not be influencing any decisions made by the 21-year-old back.

“There’s two different ways he can go about it,” Glenn said. “He could rehab this … or he could have surgery and get it cleaned up. But the rehab time will be exactly the same. That will be a decision him and his agent will have to make. I’m not making that decision.”

Braelon Allen Might Miss The Season

The time table on Allen’s return seems to be entirely dependent of how the remainder of the Jets‘ season plays out. The team currently has a 91% chance to miss the playoffs according to playoffstatus.com, the second lowest mark in the AFC.

Knowing this, it seems improbable that they would rush a young player back rather than give him a full year to rehab what is a relatively minor knee injury all things considered.

“Earlier in the week, Glenn called it ‘a pretty serious knee injury,’ but he withheld a timetable as Allen sought a second opinion,” Cimini writes in a Friday afternoon article. “Now they have clarity. The best-case scenario is an early-December return; he also could miss the remainder of the season.”

The Jets have been proactive in replacing Allen, signing veteran running back Khalil Herbert yesterday.
