Jets’ Horrible Streak Continues

With Sunday’s 34-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins, the New York Jets have officially been eliminated from playoff contention. The elimination extends the Jets’ playoff drought to 15 years, the longest active playoff drought in all of North America’s major professional men’s sports leagues.

“Once again, the Jets own sole possession of the longest active postseason slump in North America’s men’s sports leagues — the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS. They’ve been sharing it for several months each year with the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, currently at 14 years,” wrote Rich Cimini of ESPN.

The Jets fan base has been waiting to see their team in a playoff game for much longer than almost any other NFL fan base. For comparison, the Atlanta Falcons have the second-longest playoff drought in the NFL, at eight years, which is about half of New York’s drought.

The last time the Jets made the postseason was in 2010, when they advanced all the way to the AFC Championship but lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Rex Ryan was the head coach, and Mark Sanchez was the starting quarterback at the time.

Not only does the Jets franchise have the longest active streak of missing the playoffs, but they also own a growing streak of double-digit loss seasons.

“At 3-10, they reached double-digit losses for the sixth straight year, tying them for the third-longest such streak in the Super Bowl era. The longest skids belong to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 12 (1983-1994) and the Las Vegas Raiders at seven (2003-2009),” wrote Cimini.

New York will hope to end the playoff drought next season, but for now, all they can do is focus on how they can potentially accomplish that.

Players and Coach Discuss Streak

When asked about the Jets officially missing the playoffs again running back Breece Hall said, “It’s a yearly thing, it definitely starts to weigh on you. At the end of the day, you start to look at yourself. You see your peers and you see other guys that you’re just as good as, if not better than, and they get to just have a lot of fun.” (SNYJets on X)

Hall then said, “With AG here, I see the vision and I see how things are changing around. We’ve just got to be better as a team and go out and execute what the coaches are coaching us to do.”  (SNYJets on X)

Defensive end Jermaine Johnson said, “It’s s–tty. Nobody likes losing. I love the Jets and I want to do everything in my power to change this thing around.” (SNYJets on X)

When asked how he processes being the head coach of a team with a 15 year playoff drought, Aaron Glenn said, “Get better. That’s it.” (SNYJets on X)

Patience is Key

Yes, Jets fans have been waiting for too long and have been more than patient, but with a new regime led by first-year Head Coach Aaron Glenn and General Manager Darren Mougey, the message to fans seems to be ‘patience’.

Veteran kicker Nick Folk, who was on the Jets team the last time they made the playoffs in 2010, spread that exact message. According to Cimini, Folk said, “You can build a house on a bad foundation, but it’s not going to stand very long. So, I think AG is trying to do the right thing and build a good foundation so that he can build something that’s long lasting.”
