Jets Insider Flags 8-Game Starting QB as Potential ‘Good Add’

With the start of the regular season on the horizon, all 32 NFL teams are in the midst of one of the busiest stretches of the year. That especially applies to the New York Jets, who are attempting to find balance as the Aaron Glenn era begins.

Could general manager Darren Mougey scour the wire for some additional quarterback depth? That’s what one prominent Jets insider is campaigning for.

On Tuesday morning, news broke (per Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Media) that the New York Giants are waiving Tommy DeVito. In the aftermath, ESPN’s Rich Cimini named the other New York squad as a sensible landing spot.

Cimini: Tommy DeVito Would Be a ‘Good Add’ for Jets’ Practice Squad

Cimini says there’s plenty of room for someone like Brady Cook to make it on the practice squad, even if DeVito did the same.

“I know others have mentioned this as well, but I think he’d be a good add for the Jets (practice squad),” Cimini wrote. “They like Cook and can keep him, too, but DeVito has game experience. Important, considering [Tyrod] Taylor’s injury/history.”

DeVito, who turned 27 earlier in the month of August, has 12 games of experience under his belt. Eight of those contests came as a starter, seeing him complete 145 of 222 passes for 1,358 yards, 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

Most of that production came during his debut campaign in 2023, when he posted a 3-3 record as a starter en route to becoming a social media darling in the process. DeVito completed 30 of his 38 pass attempts this preseason, throwing for 323 yards, 4 touchdowns and an interception.

Because of the Giants’ offseason signings of Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, though, DeVito became expendable. That was made the case even more when the organization moved up for Jaxson Dart in the first round of April’s NFL Draft. It’s possible that DeVito goes unclaimed and returns to New York’s practice squad. If the Jets are interested, they hold the No. 7 spot in priority.

With Adrian Martinez being waived following a tumultuous summer, the Jets made their opinion on him clear. Throw in Taylor’s arthroscopic surgery on his knee, and perhaps Cimini has a point. Added depth wouldn’t hurt. Cook’s spot also may not be safe.

New York Getting Healthy Ahead of Week 1 of Regular Season

Fortunately for the Jets, they’re improving on the health front as Week 1 approaches. That applies to Taylor, too, as he recovers from the minor knee procedure. Speaking to the media on Monday, Glenn revealed that the veteran quarterback is tracking to be ready for the regular season.

The same is true for running back Isaiah Davis, cornerback Sauce Gardner and even wide receiver Allen Lazard.

“I would say, like Tyrod, I think he’s on track,” Glenn said. “Sauce is on track. Isaiah, he’s on track. I feel really, really good with the guys that were injured and where they’re at right now. Obviously, they still have a protocol they have to go through as far as getting themselves ready, but I do feel good about those guys.”

September 7’s outing is a significant one for New York. Not only do they square off against old friend Aaron Rodgers and his Pittsburgh Steelers, but it’s a milestone debut for Justin Fields. The Jets’ new signal-caller faces high expectations in 2025-26, as does his head coach.

With Mougey and his staff pulling the strings up top, Gang Green is looking to put its roster in a competitive position ahead of that game.
