Jets Lose Starter to Pec Tear, Season in Jeopardy

The New York Jets secured their first victory of the season, but it came at a cost.

ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler shared on social media that starting safety Andre Cisco “has a pectoral tear that needs repair.”

ESPN’s Rich Cimini added more details in a column, stating that the injury “will require surgical repair” and that he will be “out indefinitely.”

Cimini revealed that, “Cisco was injured in the fourth quarter of the Jets’ 39-38 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday — their first victory of the season.”

Cisco Could Be out for the Remainder of the 2025 Season

The Jets don’t play a game this week; they are on their bye. However, only nine games are remaining in their season.

It’s fair to wonder if Cisco will suit up again for the Jets this year.

“In severe cases, this will be an incision in the middle of your chest. The tendon will have to be reattached to the bone,” The New York Sports Medicine Institute wrote. “The healing process can take from 6 months to a year after surgery. The first part of the healing process after surgery is resting and managing the pain.”

The Jets only have a little more than two months left in their regular season in 2025.

The Cisco Experiment Didn’t Work out for the Jets

It was a swing worth taking if you were the Jets.

They desperately needed help on the backend of their defense. Cisco, 25, was a free agent after four years with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

He had shown flashes throughout his career of being a ballhawk and a playmaker with eight interceptions, 24 pass deflections, and three forced fumbles.

The Jets signed Cisco to a one-year $8.5 million contract in free agency. However, the green and white didn’t get the bang for their buck.

Cimini wrote, “Cisco has started every game for the Jets (1-7) and has played 98% of the defensive snaps. He has 41 tackles but only one pass breakup and no interceptions.”

“The Jets were hoping he’d bring range and ball-hawking skills to their secondary, but that hasn’t materialized. In fact, no one on the Jets’ defense has recorded an interception,” Cimini bluntly stated.

Jets Have Their Replacement Plan Ready

With Cisco out for the foreseeable future, the Jets will turn to a recently benched former fan favorite.

Tony Adams is the most likely replacement option for Cisco in the secondary. He was benched in the middle of the season in favor of talented rookie Malachi Moore. Now they are set to play together as a tandem on the backend of the defense.

Adams, 26, joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He quickly transformed from a borderline rosterable player to a full-time starter at the safety position.

He has appeared in 48 games and has made 31 starts during his career to date. With those opportunities, Adams has collected four interceptions, 14 pass deflections, a sack, nine tackles for loss, and has totaled 203 tackles.

The Jets will also likely have to explore the free agent and trade market to find some replacement depth options in the secondary.
