The New York Jets executed a flurry of NFL roster moves ahead of their matchup against the Carolina Panthers in Week 7.
Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic shared the scoop on social media.
The green and white activated rookie linebacker Ja’Markis Weston off injured reserve. That placed him on the 53-man roster. Earlier this week, the Jets released defensive tackle Leonard Taylor III, opening up a roster spot they never filled. Weston now replaces that spot on the roster.
The Jets signed wide receiver and return specialist Isaiah Williams off the practice squad to the active roster. In a corresponding roster move, the team waived linebacker Mark Robinson.
Gang Green chose to temporarily elevate cornerback Korie Black and linebacker Jackson Sirmon from the practice squad for the game on Sunday. Both players will revert to the practice squad on Monday, October 20.
Jets Bring Back Pass Catcher After Punishing Him
In Week 4, Isaiah Williams cost the Jets big time. He coughed up a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half that resulted in a Miami Dolphins touchdown. To make matters worse, he inexplicably fair caught a ball at his own two-yard line.
Ahead of the Week 5 matchup versus the Dallas Cowboys, Williams was waived by the team. It seemed to be a move built around accountability, considering his mistakes. However, a few days later, the team brought him back on the practice squad before the London trip against the Denver Broncos.
Williams was elevated from the practice squad for the Broncos game and made a positive impact in the return game. Now, Williams is back full-time, returning to the 53-man roster.
Gang Green Will Be Paper Thin at WR in Week 7
Last week, for the Broncos game, the Jets elevated a pair of wideouts. There were no such elevations this week.
Strange.
Garrett Wilson was officially listed as “doubtful” with a knee issue, and he didn’t practice this week. It is very unlikely that he will suit up in the game.
That means the team will be operating with the likes of Josh Reynolds (who is also banged up), Allen Lazard, Tyler Johnson, Arian Smith, and the newly signed Williams.
Not ideal.
Jets to Have Their Special Teams Weapon in Panthers Matchup
The green and white will likely be without several key special teams contributors in Week 7.
Both cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers and linebacker Cam Jones are listed as “doubtful” with hip injuries.
However, the good news is that the Jets activated Weston from injured reserve. He is listed as “questionable” with a groin injury, but he was a full participant in practice all week.
Senior Jets contributor Randy Lange posted some more information in a press release, “Weston was placed on Injured Reserve with a designation to return on Aug. 26. Weston played 60 preseason snaps (33 defense, 27 special teams) and turned in a ST fumble recovery deep in Packers territory that led to a field goal in the Jets’ 30-10 win in their preseason opener at Green Bay.”
Weston is a versatile piece that can provide some insurance on special teams. However, his biggest contributions are likely to come on special teams for the Jets.
