Jets Make Final Call on Rookie QB Brady Cook for Ravens Game

The New York Jets will leave rookie quarterback Brady Cook on ice — for now.

Head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed that Tyrod Taylor will be the starting QB in Week 12 against the Baltimore Ravens. Justin Fields will move into the QB2 role.

There was some speculation that the Jets could move Fields from QB1 to QB3 and outright sign Cook from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. However, that won’t be happening this week.

“Still developing,” head coach Aaron Glenn responded when asked where Cook is in his development. “He is still developing and listen, there has been a plan for him from the very beginning. I wanted to make sure we do what’s right for him, and who knows, we’ll see what happens as the season progresses. I’m not promising anything, but he knows exactly what his role is when it comes to this team. I’ll say right now, Tyrod is our starter.”

Coach Glenn Explains Why He Made the QB Change This Week

“Yeah, I talked to both of those guys [and] talked to the team on Monday, Tyrod will be our starter,” Coach Glenn said.

When asked why he decided to make that move, Coach Glenn bluntly responded, “Because I wanted to.”

“It was purely my decision [and] I felt like it was the time to do it. Again, I had good conversations with both of those guys and listen these situations are not always easy, and as a head coach, you have to do what’s best for the team, and I felt like it was best for the team,” Coach Glenn explained on Wednesday, November 19.

Glenn had a private one-on-one conversation with Fields to deliver the news.

“He understood my decision. Obviously, he is not happy with the decision, and I don’t expect him to be, but he understands,” Glenn said.

The Jets took a gamble and went all in on Fields. Obviously, it didn’t work. Coach Glenn was asked why not?

“There are a number of things. Obviously, offensively, you want your passing game to be better. Listen, that is not totally on him. There are a number of things that go into that — that is myself, that is the routes that are ran, that is dropped balls, that includes him. At this point, I felt like man, we have to do something to get this team going offensively in the passing game, and I felt it was time to make that decision,” Glenn added.

Fields’ Future With the Team Appears Murky

The future of Fields with the Jets is up in the air. When Coach Glenn was asked directly if the former Ohio State product has a future with this team, he responded, “Uhm, that’s a ways down the road. We’re trying to get ready to win a game.”

In other words, Coach Glenn was non-committal on Fields’ future with the team. Despite the financial commitment, $30 million in guaranteed money, he is unlikely to be on the roster in 2026.

“Fields is under contract for 2026 ($20 million salary, half of which is guaranteed), but it’s hard to imagine him as part of the plan,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote.
