The New York Jets are sticking with their rookie quarterback.
Head coach Aaron Glenn announced that undrafted free agent Brady Cook will remain the starting quarterback for the Week 16 contest against the New Orleans Saints.
“When it comes to our quarterback situation, Brady will be starting this game. I feel like I want to continue to evaluate him and see exactly how he is going to operate on a consistent basis,” Coach Glenn explained on Wednesday, December 17.
QB2 Decision Is Still up in the Air for the Jets
“Throughout the week, Tyrod [Taylor] and Justin [Fields], we’ll see how they progress throughout the week to see exactly who will be the [No.] two and the [No.] three. Alright, because those guys are coming back from injury. I want to make sure that we get the person that is going to be the most healthy to be able to operate as the [No.] two. So I think that should clear that up,” Coach Glenn said.
Taylor is battling a groin injury. He got hurt during the second drive of the Week 14 Miami Dolphins game. Cook took over for Taylor for the rest of that contest.
Fields has been battling knee soreness. He was benched in favor of Taylor ahead of the Week 12 contest against the Baltimore Ravens. It’s unclear exactly when Fields hurt his knee.
Earlier this week, the Jets parted ways with quarterback Adrian Martinez. That seemingly indicated that one of Fields or Taylor would be healthy enough to be available for the Jets this week. Coach Glenn confirmed that it is indeed the case.
The healthiest passer will serve as the QB2 to Cook on Sunday against the Saints.
Coach Glenn Explains Why He Is Sticking With Cook
“Number one, everything that we have seen from training camp up until this point. Also, him coming into the first game when Tyrod got hurt, we were down 21, man, that wasn’t a good situation for him to be in. Then coming back to another game being down 21, man, I want to see him in the situation where our defense, our offense, and our special teams are complementing each other. To see exactly how he is going to operate there. I think he deserves an opportunity to do it,” Coach Glenn explained when asked what intrigues him enough to stick with Cook.
Cook has appeared in two games this season. With those opportunities, Cook has completed 57.1% of his passes, has thrown for 339 passing yards, and has one passing touchdown to five interceptions.
Cook will get his second straight start in Week 16. The former Missouri product’s first NFL action came in a relief effort for Taylor after his injury.
Coach Glenn was asked, if Cook remains healthy, will he stay as the QB1 for the Jets the rest of the way?
“Well, we are not worried about that right now. The only thing I’m worried about is New Orleans right now,” Coach Glenn responded.
The Jets have three games remaining in the 2025 regular season.
