Jets Make Flurry of Signings Including Well Traveled Rams Draft Pick

The New York Jets got busy on Tuesday, December 16.

Gang Green announced that they have officially released veteran wide receiver Allen Lazard. They tossed quarterback Adrian Martinez to the curb from the practice squad and replaced him with linebacker Ochaun Mathis.

More Details on the Jets’ Newest Addition

Mathis, 26, entered the league as the No. 189 overall pick in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL draft. He spent the first year and a half of his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams.

Over the last season and a half, Mathis has spent time with four different organizations, including the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Tennessee Titans, and, most recently, the Cleveland Browns.

The former TCU and Nebraska product has appeared in 14 games during his NFL career. Most of his snaps have come on special teams (286 snaps), but he has also gotten some action on defense (107 snaps).

The Jets list him at 6-foot-5, and he weighs 260 pounds.

Jets Cut Ties With Last Piece of the Aaron Rodgers Era

With Lazard off the team, that officially ends the Aaron Rodgers era on 1 Jets Drive.

Lazard was the last piece of that failed Rodgers experiment. The sole reason Lazard was on the team was to attempt to lure AR to New York — and it worked.

Rodgers’ landing in NY was a success, but everything after that was an utter failure.

“In three seasons with the Jets, Lazard recorded 70 receptions for 911 yards and eight touchdowns. His playing time was limited to only 250 snaps this season; he finished with 10 catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. All told, he made $24 million during his time with the Jets,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote.

Jets Make Multiple Additions to Secondary

The green and white weren’t done there.

Lazard being cut from the 53-man roster opened up a spot. That went to safety Jarius Monroe, whom the team signed on Tuesday, December 16, to the active roster.

“Monroe (6-2, 205) was added to the Jets’ practice squad on Nov. 5 and elevated for Week 11, when he played 12 special teams snaps against the Patriots. Initially signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Tulane in May 2024, Monroe appeared in 5 games for the Green & White last season, playing 17 defensive snaps and 58 special teams snaps,” Jets editorial contributor Susanna Weir wrote in a press release.

The team also signed defensive back Jaylen Mahoney to the practice squad.

“Mahoney (5-11, 200) signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt in 2024. After being signed to the practice squad in August that year, he appeared in 3 games with the team and played 30 special teams snaps. Mahoney spent part of the 2025 season on the 49ers’ practice squad and was released by the team in October,” Jets editorial contributor Susanna Weir described in a press release.

The Jets’ secondary is in shambles after a slew of injuries. They will have to use a combination of smoke and mirrors, plus rely on players who haven’t suited up in this system, to try and finish off the 2025 season. There are three games left for the Jets.
