Jets Part Ways With Rookie Minutes Into Training Camp Practice

The New York Jets started training camp practice at 8:30 am on Tuesday, July 29.

10 minutes later, they parted ways with rookie undrafted free agent placekicker Caden Davis. Gang Green posted the press release at 8:40 am.

With a spot on the 91-man roster available, the Jets inked another rookie, running back Lawrance Toafili.

Davis Cut Leaves the Jets Thin at a Certain Position

The Jets cutting ties with Davis now leaves the team with only one kicker left on the roster, Harrison Mevis.

“The Jets are down to one kicker after cutting Caden Davis. We’ll see if they add another,” Brian Costello of the New York Post reacted to the news on social media.

Coz broke the news on Monday, July 28, that the Jets hosted longtime NFL veteran Nick Folk for a workout at the team’s facilities.

“The Jets had an old friend in for a tryout today – kicker Nick Folk, per sources. Folk kicked for the Jets from 2010-16,” Costello revealed on X previously Twitter.

A potential reunion in the works?

A Familiar Face Gets Another Shot With the Jets

Toafili’s name should sound familiar to Jets fans.

He participated in the team’s rookie minicamp as a tryout player back in May.

“Toafili (5-11, 194) spent the last five seasons at Florida State and appeared in 55 games. He became just the fifth player in FSU history to score both a receiving and rushing touchdown of at least 70 yards. During the 2024 season, he led the Seminoles with 109 rushes for 456 yards and 3 touchdowns,” Jets editorial contributor Susanna Weir wrote.

Jets Fill the Void in the Running Back Room

On Monday, July 28, Jets running back Zach Evans surprisingly decided to retire in the middle of training camp.

That left the team with five running backs on the 91-man roster: Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis, Donovan Edwards, and Kene Nwangwu.

The addition of Toafili replaces Evans in the running back room, bringing the Jets’ overall number back to six RBs on the team.

Training Camp Competitions Are Far From Over at 1 Jets Drive

With only one placekicker and one punter left on the Jets roster, you’d think the competitions have reached their respective conclusions.

Not quite.

Austin McNamara and Mevis are the lone punter and kicker on the Jets, for now.

There is still the entire three-game preseason slate left, and we are just a week into training camp. Insiders have documented the very uneven results that Mevis and McNamara have produced so far in camp.

Inevitably, the Jets are going to add more bodies to the kicking and punting rooms. Head coach Aaron Glenn’s mantra this offseason and with the Detroit Lions was to “compete.” He has also pounded the table championing the importance of special teams.

Whether or not that Jets training camp competition eventually includes a Folk hero remains to be seen.
