The New York Jets, armed with two first-round picks heading into the 2026 NFL Draft, have the opportunity to add to their roster as they see fit.
While they were winless through the first seven weeks, every draft analyst projected New York to go out and get their quarterback of the future.
But after winning three of their last five, the Jets have dropped themselves out of the top five in next April’s draft.
Of course, there’s a lot of season left, and things could change in terms of draft order, but as it stands now, Gang Green is positioned just out of reach for a quarterback of their choosing.
Mock Draft Predicts Jets Draft Jeremiyah Love
In the San Diego Union-Tribune’s latest mock draft, Eddie Brown predicted the New York Jets to select Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love with the No. 6 overall pick.
“After a busy trade deadline, GM Darren Mougey has enough draft capital to call his shot with a QB if he needs to move up. In this scenario, Mougey keeps his powder dry and selects the best player available,” wrote Brown.
“Breece Hall will be an unrestricted free agent, and there’s no guarantee the Jets keep him, even after they decided not to trade him at the deadline… Love is fourth in the country with 1,372 rushing yards, second in total touchdowns with 21, and will likely end up a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. I’d vote for him if I had a vote.”
Love is certainly an uber-talented player; he’s widely considered the top running back prospect in the 2026 draft, since before the start of the college football season.
But does the pick make sense for the current state of the Jets?
Even with Breece Hall scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, New York is better off investing the incredibly valuable No. 6 overall pick in a position of need, such as quarterback, wide receiver, defensive line, or safety.
Jets Would Be Silly to Replace Breece Hall
The New York Jets shouldn’t be in the business of replacing Hall; instead, they should be looking to extend him.
New York’s 2022 second-round pick has been one of the NFL’s top two-way threats since entering the league, racking up over 3,700 scrimmage yards over his four-year NFL career.
The Jets not trading Hall at the deadline was a clear signal that they don’t plan on losing him, and are likely going to negotiate an extension, or if all else fails, slap the franchise tag on him.
So far this season, the former Iowa State Cyclone is on pace for his first 1,000-yard rushing season, carrying the ball 187 times for 834 yards and three touchdowns through 12 games.
He’s also caught 30 balls on 39 targets, with 309 yards and one touchdown through the air.
The Jets need to make their offense foolproof next season, no matter who is under center.
Having a good running back in place would make that job a lot simpler, and letting Hall walk just to draft his replacement with the sixth overall pick is bad business.
