Jets to Make Coaching Staff Decisions Around OC Tanner Engstrand

With the New York Jets’ 2025 season crawling to an end, there are expected to be a wide array of changes coming in the offseason.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer is reporting that first-year head coach Aaron Glenn will be safe, despite a 3-13 record with one game to go.

“Here’s the reality of the Jets’ situation: There has been no discussion at the upper reaches of the organization about moving on from Aaron Glenn after one year,” wrote Breer.

“And while some people would warn that Woody Johnson could quickly turn with another embarrassing Sunday at the office, I’d be pretty surprised if that happens.”

So if Glenn is safe, and defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was already fired weeks ago, what will be the fate of first-time offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand?

Jets to Add QB Infrastructure Around Tanner Engstrand

According to Breer’s column, the New York Jets are also unlikely to move on from Engstrand.

Instead, they’ll make changes around him in hopes of fostering a positive environment for a young quarterback.

“Part of that will be assessing if the right offensive structure is in place, and that will be evaluated. Would the Jets make significant changes to the offensive staff this soon after Glenn fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks?” Continued Breer.

“To me, that is the sort of question to consider. And the plan is for Glenn to be in place in 2026 to answer it. (As it stands now, I think it’ll mean changes around OC Tanner Engstrand, with perhaps some more quarterbacking infrastructure, rather than replacing him.)”

The decision not to move on from Engstrand is the correct one.

Despite the offensive shortcomings, the quarterback play New York was working with was debilitating.

Regardless, Engstrand was still able to coordinate a top-seven rushing attack, with the Jets averaging 126.7 yards per game.

The Jets will likely move on from quarterbacks coach Charles London, an assistant who hasn’t had much success in his recent stops with the Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans.

As for candidates who could be New York’s rookie quarterback whisperer in 2026, is it possible that former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll would want to stay in the New Jersey area for a season and coach the crosstown rival of the team that fired him?

Unlikely, but that would be the dream scenario for the Jets.

But What About the Quarterback?

Of course, the staff changes don’t mean anything without a new quarterback for the New York Jets, and Breer also noted that Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey will be aggressive in their pursuit of a new signal-caller.

“That said, the biggest question being considered internally is the obvious one: what the Jets should do at quarterback. From ownership on down, there was a conscious decision made that 2025 wasn’t the year to put that on Glenn and GM Darren Mougey, because so few options were available,” reported Breer.

“So they brought in Justin Fields as a high-end Band-Aid, and that, obviously, didn’t work out as planned. With that as the backdrop, I’d expect a lot of effort and energy to be put into the position this offseason.”

Hopefully for Jets fans, the team’s overhauled quarterback infrastructure will bring success to an organization that hasn’t experienced winning football in over a decade.
