The New York Jets made Garrett Wilson a top-five highest-paid wide receiver in football. The next task is finding a Robin to his Batman.
Alex Kay of Bleacher Report proposed a trade idea that would accomplish exactly that.
New York Jets receive: wide receiver Jauan Jennings
San Francisco 49ers receive: a 2026 fifth-round pick and a 2027 third-round pick
“The Jets may have a superstar receiver in Garrett Wilson—who just became one of the league’s highest paid players—but the rest of the receivers room leaves something to be desired. Both Josh Reynolds and Allen Lazard are getting up there in age and have largely underwhelmed throughout their careers. Fourth-round rookie Arian Smith and third-round sophomore Malachi Corley are both unproven and can’t be relied upon for consistent production yet,” Kay argued.
“Trading for Jennings would immediately give the Jets a clear No. 2 option across from Wilson. It could be an ideal role for the current San Francisco 49ers wideout after he found success with less help in an injury-depleted 49ers offense last year,” Kay said. “While the Jets don’t have their own third-round pick in 2026 due to the failed Haason Reddick trade, they could create a package of Day 3 picks in 2026 along with a Day 2 selection in 2027 to facilitate the move.”
Jennings Wants a New Deal or Wants a Trade to a New Team
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter set the scene on Monday, July 14.
“San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who is scheduled to make $7.5 million in the final year of his deal, wants a new contract or a trade,” Schefter revealed.
“Jennings has approached the 49ers about his request, but little progress has been made, a source told ESPN. If a new deal is not reached by the time training camp starts next week, Jennings plans to request a trade to a team willing to pay him,” Schefter added.
According to Spotrac’s calculated market value projections, Jennings could command a two-year $38 million deal. That $19.1 million annual salary would place him No. 23 among the highest-paid wide receivers in football, per Over The Cap.
This Could Be Exactly What the Doctor Ordered
The Jets don’t need a star wide receiver; they already have one of those in Wilson. However, what they do need is a reliable player who can complement what he brings to the table.
Jennings, 28, is coming off a career year. He finished 2024 with 77 receptions for 975 receiving yards and six touchdown catches, all of those being new career highs.
“He finished 10th in yards per route run (2.51) and had only one drop. In addition, coach Kyle Shanahan considers Jennings to be one of the best blocking wideouts in the league,” Schefter revealed.
That perfectly aligns with the Jets’ mantra this offseason from the coaching staff, “No block, no rock.”
“The new staff has placed an emphasis on perimeter blocking by the wide receivers, essential for explosive plays in the running game. The Jets were lacking in that department last season, as they produced only 45 rushes of 10 yards or more, which ranked 24th,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini explained.
