Joe Rogan recently shared his thoughts on a possible fight between Jon Jones and Alex Pereira. He claimed the fight could surpass every other UFC matchup in history.
Pereira and Jones have been linked to a potential bout for quite some time. ‘Bones’ praised the Brazilian and expressed interest in fighting him to strengthen his legacy. ‘Poatan’ returned the praise and said he also wanted the fight.
After reclaiming the light heavyweight championship at UFC 32o, Pereira made his next goal clear. He wanted Jones.
Pereira aimed to move up to heavyweight and create history once again. He also suggested that a fight with Jones take place at the White House.
On a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, the longtime UFC announcer discussed why this fight matters so much. Rogan pointed out the stylistic contrast between Jones and Pereira. He claimed this could be the biggest fight of all time.
“Jones versus Alex Pereira would probably be the biggest fight in human history,” Rogan said. “You have the greatest of all time in [Jones] and arguably the most destructive striker that’s ever competed, no one’s like that guy. [Pereira]?”
Joe Rogan says Jon Jones vs. Alex Pereira Should Be a BMF Title Fight
Rogan also suggested that a possible Jones vs. Pereira fight should be contested for the BMF title. ‘Poatan’ currently holds the light heavyweight championship. Meanwhile, Jones recently vacated his heavyweight championship in June.
It’s important to note that Max Holloway is currently the BMF title holder. However, Rogan proposed another version of the title for the heavier weight divisions. This would give Pereira a chance to make history by becoming the first three-division UFC champion.
“Make it the [BMF] upper edition. You have the BMF belt for 155ers. Who is the real BMF?” Rogan said. “Do you think any one those guys can beat Alex Pereira? You think you can get a 155-pounder in there against [Pereira]? Does Max Holloway survive against [Pereira]? No! Shut the [expletive] up.”
Creating a second BMF title lets Holloway keep defending his version of the title. At the same time, it adds another layer of importance to a Jones vs. Pereira clash. A special title on the line would raise the stakes even higher.
Rogan Suggests a Catchweight for Jones vs. Pereira
Rogan also suggested the fight take place at a catchweight. Jones has fought at heavyweight twice. He defeated winning both Ciryl Gane and Stipe Miocic by submission and TKO, respectively.
Before vacating the title, Jones was in talks to face Tom Aspinall in a title unification bout. Those talks fell through and the bout failed to materialize. Despite fan interest, Rogan believes for Jones vs. Pereira is the better choice.
Pereira has never fought at heavyweight. He has competed only at middleweight and light heavyweight, winning UFC championships in both divisions.
A catchweight bout could allow him to test himself without leaving his division. Pereira could also keep his light heavyweight title while chasing history.
“The big money fight is [Pereira] and [Jones] at the White House,” Rogan said. “Catchweight. Make it 225 pounds. Alex is still the light heavyweight champion, make it a catchweight fight.”
