Joe Rogan has urged Jake Paul to take a break from boxing after his knockout loss to Anthony Joshua. He raised concerns about the risks of returning to the ring too quickly.
Joshua secured a 6th round knockout over Paul last Friday’s event, which streamed live on Netflix. Paul vs. Joshua was a success for the platform, as it reportedly drew 33 million viewers.
The longtime UFC commentator emphasized that the nature of the defeat, particularly the knockout and significant strikes absorbed was concerning. Rogan warned Paul that he could jeopardize his long-term health if he resumes his boxing career without sufficient recovery time.
“Don’t do this very long because there’s a price that you pay that is not worth it,” Rogan said during an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. “That price is depression, deep depression. A severe brain imbalance that is going to lead you to addiction. It leads so many people to impulsive behavior.”
He continued:
“So many people become gambling addicts, drug addicts, alcoholics after their fighting career.”
Paul suffered a broken jaw as a result of the knockout blow. That injury is expected to keep him sidelined for at least a couple of months.
Joe Rogan Explains Severity of Damage Jake Paul Absorbed Against Anthony Joshua
Joe Rogan also explained the severity of the damage Jake Paul absorbed during his bout against Anthony Joshua. He noted that the power of the strikes, especially the final right hand that knocked Paul down, was severe.
Although Paul managed to get back to his feet, he was visibly stunned by Joshua’s significant strikes. He was unable to recover in time to beat the ten count. However, he was not knocked out cold.
Paul even answered questions during a post-fight interview, so he appeared to be fine aside from the broken jaw. Still, Rogan urged him to take time off because of the impact of Joshua’s strikes.
“Say if you have a punch card, you have so many punches you can get in your life, which I believe you do. I believe there’s a certain number,” Rogan said during The Joe Rogan Experience. “That [knockdown] was like ten bunches. It was a lot of concussions in that one punch. That was real damage.”
He added:
“If someone’s breaking you jaw in two places, the inside of your [expletive] head, there’s a lot of damage going on in there too.”
Rogan Urges Paul to Improve His Cardio
Rogan also urged Paul to improve his cardio if he wants to be more successful. He noted that there has been a noticeable pattern in his fights, as his cardio tends to waver in later rounds.
During his podcast, Rogan said Paul has proven he is a difficult opponent to deal with in the opening rounds. However, he should strongly consider adjusting his training and dedicate more time to cardio work. The UFC announcer believes the YouTuber-turned-boxer has the ability to defeat many reputable opponents.
“[Paul] gets tired in a lot of his fights in the later rounds, he should really sort that out. If he had a much bigger gas tank, if he was training with some of these elite world class strength and conditioning coaches, he would be beating a lot more guys,” Rogan said. “If that guy is only fighting three rounds, he is a [expletive] handful. He’s really good. He clocked [Joshua].”
