Joel Dahmen Leads Round 1 at Wyndham

The first round of the Wyndham Championship has come to a close in Greensboro, North Carolina. At the final event of the 2025 regular-season PGA Tour, pros at Sedgefield Country Club are hopful to secure their spot leading into the FedExCup. To start off the weekend, Joel Dahmen pleasantly surprised fans as he secured top spot on the leaderboard at the conclusion of day one.

With three top-two finishes and one win under his belt, Joel Dahmen jumped not only the Wyndham leaderboard, but is looking to boost his FedExCup standing. Starting the day at No. 101 for FedExCup ranking, a win would solidify a top 50 spot and land him right in the playoffs. When asked about his day, Dahmen acknowledged the journey ahead.

“I don’t know if you ever see 61 coming, but I saw good golf coming,” he said. “Yeah, great to make the playoffs, that would be unbelievable, give me a lot of time off this fall. We’ve got a baby coming so that would take some pressure off of that. The playoffs are a bonus for me. I’m just going to go out and try to play good golf, and I guess if I play really well, then I get to play another week.”

Dahmen ended the day with 10 birdies and a solo lead at 9-under for a final score of 61.

Dahmen’s Past Struggles

After the release of Netflix’s “Full Swing”, Joel Dahmen found himself thrust into the spotlight. His lively personality and humorous antics on-and-off the course propelled him into golf fame. Although, alongside the amazing opportunities, Dahmen found difficulty in managing it all while still devoting time to the game. In an interview with Subpar, he reflects on the challenges he faced.

“I would say the first year of Netflix, so the prior year was the hardest year of managing time because you have so many opportunities coming your way,” Said Dahmen. “And it’s easy to say yes to everything because new opportunities coming in means more money, it means more awesome stuff, meeting new people. All these opportunities are coming to you and I didn’t manage that very well because also I had my kid like three weeks before Netflix came out, season one. So that was all new, everything’s new coming at you. And I don’t think I handled that as well as I could have.”

Unfortunately, at the time, Dahmen found himself on the edge of losing his card, but came back with the help of performance coach Chris Bertram, hardwork, and the support of a great team.

“Saying no is a powerful thing. I’m in a position now where I can say no. And that is a really cool thing,” Dahmen said. “And you just say yes to the things you really want to do and that you’re passionate about. And with my great partners, I can say yes to more of those things instead of divided time around so many other things. So I am, I’m excited for what’s to come.” Joel stated in his interview with Subpar.

Dahmen and Bonnalie Split

In recent months, Joel Dahmen and long-time caddie Geno Bonnalie made headlines as they announced their split. Dahmen announced this change on X, indicating that a new perspective was needed. Geno caddied for Dahmen since 2015, making their duo-debut at the Korn Ferry Tour.

Their friendship and partnership was a high point of the Netflix series “Full Swing” and featured heavily on the show. It served as an added touch to Dahmen’s already vibrant personality. Although no longer working together, Dahmen commented on their friendship stating,

“Man, I love Geno, we still text almost daily. He’s doing well. I miss him but sometimes you have to do something hard to… look, it wasn’t an easy decision.” He reflected on the change.

Wyndham Championship

With 3 days left to play, a win would leave Dahmen feeling secure in his standings, not only for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but guaranteeing his PGA Tour card for the next two years.

Fans can watch Dahmen and others this weekend as they tackle Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. With the FedexCup Playoffs just ahead, this weekend holds a lot of weight for many great golfers looking to make the cut.
