The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in the middle of a quarterback dilemma as Mac Jones continues to impress while Brock Purdy recovers from a right big toe injury that has lingered through much of the 2025 NFL season.
Purdy’s return seems to be getting closer, sparking debate around the league about what direction the 49ers should take under center. Even after their Week 10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco remains in the thick of the playoff hunt with a 6-4 record.
With the national NFL media offering their takes on what the Niners should do, 49ers general manager John Lynch set the record straight on what the team will do at quarterback once Purdy is ready to go.
“We’ve been pretty consistent, this is Brock’s team,” Lynch said on November 13 during a KNBR appearance. “When he’s healthy and able he’ll be back out there. I think he got off to a good start with that yesterday… We’ll have them both ready, if [Purdy] shows his health and his ability, then he’ll be out there.”
Former 49ers Star Calls for Mac Jones to Take Over
One of the NFL analysts who’s calling for a change at quarterback and riding the performances of Jones is former 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman. The former defender recently shared his honest thoughts on the San Francisco situation under center.
“I just don’t see how Kyle will be able to take Mac Jones off the field with how he’s playing,” Sherman wrote on November 9. “I know Brock Purdy has to start if he’s healthy, but this is a hot-hand situation right now, and Mac is rolling. Not trying to spark controversy, but this is an obvious observation. Either way, Mac has made himself a lot of money and will be starting somewhere next season.”
49ers Are Blocking the Outside Noise
Although Purdy didn’t return from his right big toe injury against the Rams, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated for the first time since it was aggravated in Week 4 that he could have been available as Jones’ backup.
Following the loss to Los Angeles, Shanahan spoke with the media and shared the latest regarding Purdy, noting that they intend to take their time with him until he’s 100 percent.
“He could have gone [as the No. 2], definitely,” Shanahan said after the loss to the Rams (h/t ESPN). “I just decided to hold him up in that situation… It depends on how close to 100 percent he gets. Our dilemma or what we’re trying not to do is put him out in the situation we did versus Jacksonville six weeks ago … I do believe he’s closer and further along than what he was at that time. Hopefully he’ll have a chance this week.”
Despite all the rumors, Jones isn’t paying attention to the outside noise and focusing on the week-to-week grind of the NFL, which sees the Niners facing the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11.
“I’ve never tried to look ahead,” Jones said after the Week 10 defeat. “It’s hard not to, but I never want to do that. I want to focus on each week and I know how challenging the NFL is just having played for a couple of years and feel like we have a young team that needs leadership right now and my goal is to lead them and get ready for Arizona.”
