Justin Herbert Shares Thoughts on New Chargers RBs

The Los Angeles Chargers were able to bring in two weapons for their offense ahead of the 2025-26 season.

The Bolts signed running back Najee Harris to a one-year deal and drafted Omarion Hampton with the 22nd overall pick in this year’s draft.

Bolts quarterback Justin Herbert spoke to the media after the second day of mandatory minicamp and shared his thoughts on how Harris and Hampton have been with the team.

“They’ve done a good job picking up the offense. It can be a complex offense to learn, but those guys have done a great job at picking it up and especially as a rookie,” Herbert said. “I don’t sense any hesitancy by the two…They’re both very athletic. Excited to get them involved and great teammates as well.”

Harris joins the Bolts after spending the beginning of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former Steeler rushed for over 4,000 yards and recorded 28 touchdowns during his time in Pittsburgh.

Hampton was selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft after playing three years at North Carolina. The Tarheel product ran for over 3,500 yards and logged 36 touchdowns.

Justin Herbert is not the only person on the team who is impressed by how quickly Omarion Hampton is picking up the offense.

Chargers’ offensive coordinator Greg Roman told reporters what he thinks of the rookie running back has been in offseason training.

“I felt like he’s the total package… I’m really, really pleased with what I’m seeing out there right now,” Roman said of Hampton. “You don’t see a lot of guys find the hole [in the run] like he’s doing right now.”

Head coach Jim Harbaugh also raved about the team’s first-round draft pick.

“A four-down back. Somebody that can run between the tackles, the outside lanes, catch the ball out of the backfield, he can protect. He really does it all,” Harbaugh told CBS. “He’s gonna be a great combination with Najee Harris. There’ll be plenty of cars to go around.”

The Chargers had JK Dobbins as the primary running back, who rushed for 905 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns.

Pro Football Focus released its yearly Top 32 rankings for each position group. The Chargers had Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris featured in the running back rankings, at 24 and 26, respectively.

PFF’s Trevor Sikkema believes Hampton has the best landing spot to breakout in his rookie season with the Chargers.

Sikkema noted that Harris had been receiving better rushing grades every year he has played and could increase in Los Angeles.

Hampton said he believes he and Najee can be a dominant backfield duo in the NFL.

“I’m excited, we got me and Najee, a dominant duo backfield. I’m excited to learn from him, I’m excited to get out there. We got a good offensive line, a good quarterback. I feel like we’re building something special here.” Hampton said, via the NFL.
