Following a tough divisional loss to their rivals, the Los Angeles Rams, the Seattle Seahawks are trying to regroup. However, before the Seahawks can fully recover, the Rams are going to add a little bit of salt to the Seahawks’ wounds.
Quarterback Sam Darnold had a disastrous day against the Rams’ defensive coordinator, Chris Shula, and his defense. Darnold had four interceptions and a 45.5 QB rating in the loss.
This was Darnold’s first game against the Rams since his wild-card playoff round loss to the Rams as a member of the Minnesota Vikings. In that game, in which the Vikings went on to lose 27-9, Darnold was sacked nine times and seemed lost throughout.
The Seahawks’ strategy against the Rams on Sunday was to attack downfield, something Rams defensive back Kam Kinchens took offense to.
Seahawks Mistake
Following the game on Sunday, the Rams were riding high, especially their defense, after completely shutting down Sam Darnold with four interceptions.
One player who was especially fired up was Rams cornerback Kam Kinchens, who got Darnold for two of his interceptions. Kinchens has grown fond of playing the Seahawks as well, with four of his six career interceptions coming against the Seahawks.
Wyatt Miller of Rams.com, in his November 16 article, wrote about why Kinchens feels he’s played so well against the Seahawks.
“Man, they want to throw the ball,” Kinchens said. “Most people want to just dink and dunk and run the ball and kind of chip their way down the field. So people who want to kind of put it down the field or kind of give us a shot, that’s their mistake.”
Kinchens then added that trying to test the Rams’ secondary like Darnold did is a mistake.
“They don’t know how good the secondary is, too, so if they wanna keep trying us, then they’ll keep seeing,” Kinchens said.
While testing the Rams’ secondary as much as Darnold did might have been a mistake, the team is determined to learn from this game.
Learning From Their Mistakes
The Seahawks know that, despite falling only a missed field goal short of beating the Rams, they have work to do if they want to beat them when they meet again later this season.
John Boyle of Seahawks.com wrote in his November 16 article about head coach Mike Macdonald, noting that the next game against the Rams will be about how each team evolves from this one.
“We’re going to be seeing a lot of these guys,” Macdonald said. “We’re going to see him twice a year, possibly three (times), and to me it’s, who evolves best from game to game, who learns from it, who grows the most is going get the advantage every time we play. Every time we play it’s an absolute know-down, drag-out fight.”
Macdonald then discussed how games like this one are great learning opportunities for the team.
“Obviously we’re disappointed, but it’s very clear to me that we have a great team,” Macdonald said. “We’re going to learn to win games like that, and we’re going to learn from week like this. We’re young, you’ve got a young head coach, I’m learning how to prepare our team from week-to-week, so we’re all learning, we’re all growing. I actually think that’s a competitive advantage for us as we start to grow. We are willing to grow and evolve, given any circumstances, but we have to keep doing that.”
The Seahawks will take Kam Kinchens’ advice into account when the two teams face off once again in Week 16.
