Karl Smesko and the Atlanta Dream have officially booked their spot in the 2025 WNBA playoffs after beating the Dallas Wings 100-78 on Friday night.
Going into the game, the Dream needed one more victory to clinch the spot. They’ve had an excellent regular season as one of the best teams in the WNBA, especially in the Eastern Conference.
Smesko and Rhyne Howard reflected on the win after the game, via ClutchPoints’ Malik Brown. The head coach understood the importance of helping Atlanta secure a high seed as they aspire to compete for the championship.
“We had bigger goals than the playoffs from the beginning, but you can’t reach those goals unless you make the playoffs,” Smesko said. “So it’s a step in the right direction. Obviously, we’d like to be in the best position at the end of the regular season in terms of hosting as much as we can. And there’s a whole bunch of teams super tight. So this was an important game for us, and I’m glad we were able to have the fourth quarter we did.”
“We have to finish out. We’ve clinched, but that doesn’t mean our spot can’t change,” Howard said. “We didn’t clinch a spot; we clinched a place in the playoffs, and we have to take care of business, finish it out, make sure that we’re trying to have the best outcome possible and make sure we’re doing everything we’re supposed to be doing.”
