It was an impressive feat for Kelsey Plum to accomplish. Taking into account her scoring and playmaking talent, it makes sense for her to join Caitlin Clark as the only players to pull that off.

Despite her efforts, it wasn’t enough as the Sparks lost 92-84 to the Mercury on Tuesday night.

The game initially started out as a close one between the two teams. Los Angeles wasn’t at its best form, going down 24-18 after the first quarter. They were unable to stop Phoenix’s consistent shot-making, who produced 20 or more points throughout all four quarters.

The Sparks trailed 68-57 going into the fourth quarter. That period was where the hosts had their best scoring punch, putting up 27 points. However, they couldn’t prevent the Mercury from making shots down the stretch, which proved to be costly in the end.

Perimeter shooting, rebounding and playmaking had their respective impact on this matchup. Phoenix prevailed in all three categories; they converted 11 of their 25 attempts from three, a sharp accuracy of 44%, while securing 32 rebounds and 28 assists. It wasn’t the same case for Los Angeles; the hosts only knocked down seven of their 24 tries from deep, an underwhelming accuracy of 29.2%, while getting 29 rebounds and 19 assists.

Three players scored in double-digits on Los Angeles’ behalf, including Plum. Dearica Hamby led the squad in scoring with 25 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and two assists. She shot 9-of-12 overall and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. Rickea Jackson came next with 21 points and three rebounds, while Rae Burrell provided nine points and five rebounds.

Los Angeles fell to a 17-19 record on the season, holding the sixth spot of the Western Conference standings. They are 1.5 games behind the Seattle Storm and Golden State Valkyries, continuing to fight for a playoff spot.

Plum has helped the Sparks return to playoff contention in her first year with the team, leaving the Las Vegas Aces after seven seasons. Her championship experience and All-Star play has given Los Angeles a chance to extend its season, a testament to her talent.

She is averaging 20.4 points, 5.9 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game after 35 appearances. She is shooting 43.2% from the field, including 35.9% from three, and 89% at the line.

With eight games remaining, the Sparks will look to bounce back in their next home matchup. They host the Indiana Fever on Aug. 29 at 10 p.m. ET.
