Kevin Patullo Responds to Comments From Eagles Veteran Lane Johnson

The offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles responded to comments from his star lineman, accusing the play calling of being “predictable.”

Offensive tackle Lane Johnson was critical of Kevin Patullo and the offense after the Eagles dropped two straight games, including an embarrassing loss to the division rival New York Giants on “Thursday Night Football.”

What did Lane Johnson Say About the Offense?

Johnson said the following statements after Thursday’s loss, according to The Athletic.

  • “You can game plan all you want. But when you get in the game, a lot of it is making adjustments. … We’re not efficient in anything.”
  • “I felt like a lot of what we did last year was run play-action, and it kind of fed off each other. And defenses had a real hard time of guessing what it was going to be. And I think the last two weeks, you kind of know what it is: You know when the pass is coming, you know when the run is coming. … Moving forward, we’ve got to do a better job of that.”
  • “There’s flashes. But flashes don’t score points. It’s about consistency. … We have spurts. But nothing consistent enough.”
  • “We have things we talk about, but the execution isn’t there. We get behind the chains. We get very predictable sometimes. It’s frustrating. But we have a lot of season ahead of us. Confident with the guys in the room to get it fixed and not make games so hard on yourself, make it more fluid. I feel like we’ve been very stagnant offensively.”
  • “We have to be able to keep the defense guessing. Not being predictable. We have spurts, but nothing consistent with what we’re doing. … I feel like last year we had big shots, big explosives that we were able to (feed off of) on our drives. We have some, but we’re not able to capitalize on them. We may have a huge play, but we’re not able to keep going and score.”
  • “We were winning (in the first month), but we weren’t dominating. It’s frustrating. You see the guys that we have — on the offensive side of the ball, we should be doing a lot more to help our defense out. It’s frustrating, but nothing we can’t turn around.”

Kevin Patullo Responds to Lane Johnson’s Criticism

During media availability Tuesday with Philadelphia’s top assistants, Patullo got a chance to respond.

“I think the comment Lane had, and what’s great about the players is the communication with all of us is constant, whether it’s during game, whether it’s during the week, even on days off, things like that,” Patullo said. “That’s been really, really good and productive for us. I think a lot of it comes down to is, and I know (head coach Nick Sirianni) alluded to this, too, is sometimes situational moments in the game where you’re limited a little bit depending on where you’re at (with) field position, down and distance, select plays, what the defense does at times, if they’re a big edge pressure team during certain situations, that can dictate a little bit of what you want to do. I think when you talk about the situational stuff and/or the predictability, you’ve just got to look at where the whole context is, and I think that’s what kind of the last day or so, over the weekend, things we were able to look at where we were, where we are, where we want to go, and what we know we need to do to go forward. I think it was very productive. We had a good meeting yesterday as an offensive unit, and so I think we’re in a good spot working forward.”

The Eagles travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings on Sunday, Oct. 19.
