Kyle Schwarber Hits 50th Home Run, Becomes Second Phillies Player to Reach Mark

Kyle Schwarber’s career year once again took a historic twist Tuesday night.

The Philadelphia Phillies slugger became the first National League hitter to reach 50 home runs, and became the second Phillies player in the organization’s illustrious history to reach that mark, when he socked a three-run, seventh-inning homer in Philadelphia’s 9-3 win over the New York Mets.

The Phillies (85-60) hold a nine-game lead over the Mets with just 17 games to play. They won for the ninth time in their past 12 games moved within 3.5 games of the Milwaukee Brewers for the No. 1 seed in the National League.

What Did Kyle Schwarber Say About Hitting 50 Home Runs?

Schwarber has been one of the most prolific sluggers since he broke in with the Chicago Cubs in 2015. Yet, a combination of injuries and playing in the National League — which only adopted the designated hitter rule in 2022 — kept him from reaching the half-century mark for home runs.

But when he launched a 3-1 fastball 437 feet to the deepest part of the park, left-center field,  Schwarber joined former Phillies legend Ryan Howard, who socked a club-high 58 homers in his MVP year of 2006, as the only Philadelphia hitters to hit 50 homers.

“Just to join him, it’s an honor, it’s a privilege,” Schwarber said. “[Howard] has done so many great things for Philadelphia. You can only hope to follow the way he went about his business and the way that he played the game and the way he brought excitement to the fans here.”

The blast was Schwarber’s first home run since his  four-homer game against the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 28, and it boosted his major-league-leading RBI total to 123. The Phillies reportedly toasted Schwarber in their clubhouse after the game.

“It’s cool, right? Get to a nice round even number,” Schwarber said. “It’s cool to hear the stats of how many people have done things before in the game. It’s something that you don’t take lightly.”

His previous high was 47 home runs, set two seasons ago when the Phillies fell one game short of the World Series. He can add the 50-homer season to his All-Star Game MVP award, plus his record-setting, as the list of historic accomplishments of 2025.

But Schwarber, who will be a free agent at season’s end, said the time to reflect on his accomplishments is in the future. For now, he’s focused on trying to get the Phillies back to the World Series.

“I’ve always said the personal accolades will probably mean more when it’s all said and done,” Schwarber said. “I feel like we’ve got so much more baseball here and we’ve got a group of guys that feel like we can make a deep run — and that’s what we want to do.

“So it’s a cool moment, and obviously, you want to enjoy it. But there’s still a lot more baseball to be played.”

What Did The Phillies Say About Kyle Schwarber’s 50th Home Run?

The Phillies have been in awe of Schwarber’s accomplishments all season, and they lauded their superstar slugger again after the win.

“Just super excited for him and happy for him,” Phillies starter Ranger Suarez said. “He’s a tremendous player, but even more so, he’s a tremendous teammate.”

“It’s unbelievable,” said infielder Otto Kemp, who also homered Tuesday night. “It really just looks like a video game for the guy.”
