Kylian Mbappe has been taken to hospital in the United States after missing Real Madrid’s Club World Cup opener on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old trained with his Madrid teammates in Florida last Sunday ahead of their first game in Group H against Al-Hilal.

However, Mbappe missed Tuesday’s training session, with Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso claiming that the French forward was suffering from a fever.

‘Kylian was feeling a little better, but not enough,’ Alonso said after Tuesday’s session.

‘It’s better for him not to train. We’ll wait until the last minute, we’ll decide tomorrow.’

What is gastroenteritis?

Acute gastroenteritis, often called the stomach flu, is a common condition causing inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It typically results in symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, often accompanied by fever and dehydration. Most cases are mild and resolve within a few days, but severe cases may require medical attention, especially for dehydration.

Mbappe was not named in the squad for the 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Wednesday night.

Madrid have now revealed that Mbappe is now undergoing tests in hospital after suffering from acute gastroenteritis.

A statement released by Madrid on Thursday read: ‘Our player Kylian Mbappe has acute gastroenteritis and has been hospitalised for various tests and treatment.’

Madrid are scheduled to play Mexican side Pachuca in their next group game on June 22 before facing Red Bull Salzburg on June 27.
