Bronny James Recalled to Lakers

Bronny was recalled to the Lakers bench during Sunday’s 120-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, but did not play any minutes. He was likely recalled due to the Lakers’ recent bad luck with injuries, with Gabe Vincent, Rui Hachimura, Austin Reaves and rookie Adou Thiero all sidelined for considerable time.

In his second season, Bronny has averaged 1.6 points, 1.3 assists and 0.6 rebounds from 8.2 minutes across 18 games. He has shot 31% from the field and 28% from three. The second-generation player has shown flashes of being a good perimeter defender, especially in early November when he was part of JJ Redick’s closing lineups due to the injuries to Luka Doncic and his father, LeBron James.

During back-to-back wins over the Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers in early November, Bronny logged valuable minutes down the stretch, earning the praise of Lakers legend James Worthy for his hustle and defensive tenacity.

LeBron James Shines Against Memphis

While Bronny was inactive on Sunday, his father produced 26 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds to steer the Lakers to a second consecutive win over Memphis.

The win was particularly impressive as the Lakers trailed by 16 points in the second quarter against a Ja Morant-less Grizzlies squad. JJ Redick’s men would outscore the Grizzlies 66-49 in the second half to secure the win. After the game, James said his team “cracked the code” in the second half to pull away with the win.

“They played exceptional basketball in the first half when we knew we were going to get their best shot, especially after the playoff-type of format,” said James, via LA Times’ Broderick Turner.

“The team always make the adjustments coming to the next game, better prepared. So, I think it’s just in the second half, we started to crack the code a little bit. Was able to get the lead down in the third. They kind of broke away a little bit again, but we just kept at it out there and was able to have a great fourth quarter.”

The Lakers (22-11), who are 2-0 to start 2026, will now begin a two-game road trip with back-to-back contests against the San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday and Wednesday. Redick’s team is two games behind the Spurs (25-10) for the second seed in the West, but only half a game ahead of the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves (23-13). Much like last season, the final West standings may not be decided until the last day of the NBA regular season on April 12.
