Lamar Jackson Apologizes to Bills Fan After MNF Shoving Incident

The Buffalo Bills picked up one of the most exciting victories in recent memory in Week 1 when they pulled off a stunning rally to earn a 41-40 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Josh Allen went toe-to-toe with Lamar Jackson, and for the second straight time, he ended up prevailing in spectacular fashion.

Of course, the game didn’t come without a little bit of controversy. After DeAndre Hopkins hauled in an impressive one-handed touchdown catch, Jackson got into a brief altercation with a Bills fan in the stands at Highmark Stadium. When asked about the situation, Jackson shared his side of the story, while also issuing an apology to the fan.

After the Bills eliminated the Ravens in their Divisional Round playoff matchup last season, many folks were excited for the latest battle between these two AFC superpowers. Sure enough, it lived up to the billing, and even better for Buffalo is the fact that they managed to steal a win from Baltimore, despite spending much of the game trailing.

Per usual, Allen and Jackson were at their dominant best for their respective teams. For the Bills, Allen threw for 394 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding another 30 yards and two scores on the ground. He was very nearly outdueled by Jackson, who threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to adding 70 yards and another score on the ground. Baltimore also benefited from a huge Derrick Henry game, as he ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns.

One of the highlights of the game saw Hopkins make a spectacular grab on a perfect throw from Jackson to restore the Ravens’ lead to 15 points. As the two were celebrating, though, a fan in the stands reached onto the field and began hitting both Hopkins and Jackson on their helmets, prompting Jackson to turn around and shove the fan. On Wednesday, Jackson opened up on the incident and offered an apology to the fan.

“(The NFL) already talked to me about it, but I believe everyone seen what happened,” Jackson said when speaking to reporters on Wednesday. “It just happened. I got pushed, and I’m like, ‘What?’ I thought I was outside, I wasn’t even thinking about me being on the field. My apologies to whoever that was. I don’t know who it was, my apologies to him. Just chill next time. You can talk trash and stuff, but keep your hands to yourself.”

There’s no doubt that the fan should not have been reaching onto the field of play to touch Hopkins and Jackson, but it’s nice to see Jackson apologize for escalating the situation. The fan in question surely won’t make that mistake again, as they have been banned indefinitely from attending any future NFL games.

Moving forward, the Bills will have to turn the page quickly because, at the end of the day, this was only their first game of the season. There’s still a lot of work for Buffalo to do if it wants to achieve its primary goals this year, and that starts with a Week 2 matchup against the New York Jets, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
