Lane Kiffin has built a reputation as one of college footballâs great trolls, but even he may have outdone himself this past weekend.
The Ole Miss head coach found himself in the spotlight not just for beating LSU in a huge SEC showdown, but for the off-field drama that followed as his daughter Landry went public with her relationship with LSU linebacker Whit Weeks.
After Ole Missâ 31-24 win, he was asked on the field about the game and immediately took aim at his daughterâs new boyfriend. âIâm just looking for Whit right now to see if he covered the over,â Kiffin joked, poking fun at the linebacker in front of a national audience. Â
Kiffin Maturing Over the Years
As Ole Hotty Toddy noted, Kiffin admitted he handled the situation differently than he might have earlier in his career. Earlier in his career, Kiffin was much more uptight and many found him to be very unlikable. Since becoming the head coach at Ole Miss, his whole aura and personality has changed.Â
On Kirk Herbstreitâs Nonstop podcast, the Ole Miss coach opened up about seeing his daughterâs relationship and how heâs adapted to this new world that we all live in.Â
âI donât know if I would have handled it as well when I was younger,â Kiffin said. âThatâs part of where Iâm at. I just embrace things â the portal, kids, social media.â
He described watching the scene unfold like this was all scripted. âI saw the Whit stuff and the throw up and all of that. I was like, âYou know this is really like a movie or something. This was made for TV. The announcers were talking about Landryâs romance with Whit Weeks.”
Kiffin added, âThey show his family in the stands, then heâs throwing up. The 50 plays in the first half to tire him out. He gets hurt. He comes back, and I feel like Iâm watching a movie here.âÂ
Even as Landry and Weeksâ relationship makes headlines, itâs Kiffinâs continued trolling and playful reaction that makes this story even bigger.Â
Landry-Weeks Storyline Overshadows Ole Missâ Big WinÂ
While much of the attention was on the big news of Landry Kiffin and Whit Weeks new romantic relationships, Ole Miss also picked up an extremely important win against LSU.Â
Kiffin has led the Rebels to 5-0 record and have surged to the No. 4 team in the entire country in the latest AP rankings. Ole Miss has one of the most explosive offenses in the nation, averaging 530.6 yards per game.
After the Week 1 starting QB Austin Simmons went down with an injury, Division-2 transfer Trinidad Chambliss has taken the college football world by storm.Â
In just three games as the teamâs starting quarterback, Chambliss has thrown for 1,033 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for 266 yards and two more scores. He has transformed this Ole Miss offense and has put his name into the Heisman Trophy conversation.Â
Since taking over at Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin has reshaped the Rebels into one of the SECâs most entertaining and competitive programs.
However, he has yet to make a College Football Playoff appearance. With the Rebels looking more balanced than ever, is this the year Kiffin not only breaks through to the CFP but also positions Ole Miss as a legitimate contender for a national championship?
