The Las Vegas Raiders announced their practice squad roster on Wednesday August 27, 2025, and quarterback Cam Miller is on it but wide receiver Tommy Mellott is not.
Miller, 24, was cut from the Raiders 53-man roster on Tuesday August 26, 2025 after Las Vegas acquired quarterback Kenny Pickett in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. He is essentially the Raiders’ third string quarterback amid an injury to Aidan O’Connell.
Mellott, 23, was also cut by the Raiders on Tuesday, but left off the practice squad.
Mellott of Montana State and Miller of North Dakota State were opposing quarterbacks in the FCS National Championship Game on January 6, 2025. Miller’s Bison defeated Mellot’s Bobcats.
They were then selected just two picks apart by the Raiders in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL draft. Now, instead of teaming up, Miller has a future in Las Vegas while Mellott will likely have to look elsewhere.
Good Move For Miller, Puzzling Move For Mellott
Fans of Cam Miller are likely going to be disappointed he didn’t make the 53-man roster or win the backup quarterback job. But this is probably best for his long term development.
Geno Smith, Pickett and O’Connell are all now in the Raiders’ QB room along with Miller. That gives Las Vegas 125 NFL starts of quarterback experience on their roster.
That’s also three NFL veterans who have walked the walk for Miller to learn from. If Tom Brady is really a fan of him as reports suggest, the Raiders organization likely wants to give him the best opportunity to develop. Learning from these three will give him a great chance to make the transition from the FCS to the NFL well.
On the other hand, cutting Mellott entirely feels very unfair to him. Mellott was a full time starting quarterback just seven months ago. And, he was one of the best in Montana State history at that.
Did the Raiders really expect him to make the transition from FCS quarterback to NFL receiver in that short of a time span? With his athleticism and how much more he could benefit from further development, he seems like a perfect practice squad candidate for any team.
It’s possible that Mellott is unsigned because another NFL team is interested in signing him to their 53-man roster. Fans of his will have to wait and see if that’s the case.
Shedrick Jackson Also On Practice Squad
In other Raiders practice squad news, the team signed wide receiver Shedrick Jackson, the great-nephew of Raiders legend Bo Jackson, to the practice squad.
Jackson connected with Miller on a highlight-reel touchdown early in the preseason against the Seattle Seahawks. The big reception caught the attention of Raiders fans.
Jackson was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2023. He appeared in 5 games for the Bengals last season before they cut him loose in September.
The Raiders signed him to their practice squad in December 2024. Since then he has been with the Raiders organization.
Raiders fans, what do you think of the practice squad roster? Should Las Vegas have kept Tommy Mellot?
