Latest Minicamp Reports Could Spell Trouble for Bills Veteran QB

Veteran quarterback Mitch Trubisky has spent two of his eight NFL seasons backing up Josh Allen, but if Mike White has his way, Trubisky may not get a third.

Trubisky served as the Buffalo Bills‘ QB2 in 2021 and 2024, but according to multiple insiders and analysts covering the team, White is set to give Trubisky a run for his money.

“The backup QB job is up for grabs,” Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic wrote on June 13, adding:

“Minicamp was the first opportunity for reporters to see practices on consecutive days, and from both an opportunity and performance perspective, it appears that Mitchell Trubisky isn’t necessarily a lock to remain Allen’s backup in 2025. When the Bills signed Mike White to a two-year deal late in the season, that was a fairly significant signal that the team could look to replace Trubisky this upcoming season.”

More on the Buffalo Bills’ Backup QB Competition Between Mitch Trubisky & Mike White

GettyBuffalo Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky is facing serious QB2 competition from Mike White.

“By staying on the roster through the offseason, $1 million of Trubisky’s base salary became guaranteed, though the Bills can still save $1.5 million on the 2025 salary cap to release Trubisky,” Buscaglia also noted.

“However, they won’t make the decision solely by cap space. The Bills are likely going to let the two players battle it out this summer, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they gave each player time with the second unit. It really may just come down to who has the better camp and preseason, and who they trust the most to steady the ship if Allen has to miss any time, but it appears to be an open competition.”

Matt Parrino of New York Upstate believes White already has the edge over Trubisky.

“White was better than Trubisky this spring – it’s as simple as that,’ Parrino wrote on June 13. “He gets the ball out faster, has more zip on his throws, and is willing to take chances to make plays. White threw a touchdown pass to Jalen Virgil, who was working against rookie cornerback Dorian Strong. The throw was perfectly placed, and Virgil made a great play.”

“Mike White has played a lot of meaningful snaps,” Bills GM Brandon Beane said, via Parrino. “We put him on the practice squad (last year), and kind of thought maybe he’d get plucked at some point, but we were fortunate to keep him here. Told him, listen, come back, compete, and let’s make the best man win. Our job is for us to find the best 53 that we can, and so these guys will have all their opportunities.”

Trubisky Has the Stronger Pedigree, White the Stronger Arm

In March 2021, following a turbulent exit from the Chicago Bears, Trubisky signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Bills to serve as Allen’s backup. During that season, he appeared in six games, playing minimally.

After his first stint with Buffalo, Trubisky spent two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2022–23), alternating between starter and backup roles before being released in February of 2024. Weeks later, in early March, he re-signed with the Bills on a two-year deal, again accepting the role of backup QB. In 2024, he appeared in nine games, predominantly as relief, and tallied 179 yards passing while also throwing two touchdowns.

Over his two seasons with the Bills, Trubisky has completed 73.5% of his passes for 222 yards, two TDs and an interception, also rushing for a score.

A former No. 2 overall pick in 2017, Trubisky has far more experience, and he’s a threat with his legs in ways White is not. That said, White has the better arm and isn’t going quietly. Both QBs are 30, and both are vets. It’ll be interesting to see which one comes out on top when the regular season arrives.
