LeBron James finally broke his silence about his future with the Los Angeles Lakers when he pulled up for the team and his son, Bronny James‘ NBA Summer League game on July 12.
“I ain’t got nothing to talk about,” James told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin when asked if he wanted to join the broadcast to discuss the rumors about his uncertain future in Los Angeles.
James showed no tension between him and the Lakers in Las Vegas. He spoke to several members of the Lakers coaching staff, which included assistants Nate McMillan and Bob Beyers, and sat near assistant Greg St. Jean for most of the third quarter, according to The Athletic’s Dan Woike.

James also spoke with teammate Dalton Knecht, who did not play, and cheered for the Lakers’ summer league team — nodded encouragingly after 2019 first-round pick Darius Bazley’s tough finish, according to Woike.
LeBron Rumors Started After Picking Up Player Option
The rampant speculations about James’ future with the team stem from his agent, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul’s cryptic statement on June 29 when the Lakers star opted in to his $52.6 million player option.
“LeBron wants to compete for a championship,” Paul told ESPN. “He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.”
ESPN’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania reported that James will closely monitor the Lakers’ offseason. So far, the Lakers have made two key moves.
They replaced 32-year-old Dorian Finney-Smith with unproven 23-year-old wing Jake LaRavia. They also took a flier on Deandre Ayton to fill their starting center role after the former No. 1 pick reached a buyout with the Portland Trail Blazers.
“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future,” Paul continued. “We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”
LeBron ‘Wanted Out’ of Lakers: NBA Exec
Does James want out of the Lakers?
At least one league executive believes that is the case, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Ramona Shelburne.
“One Eastern Conference executive was convinced James wanted out of LA,” Windhorst and Shelburne wrote on July 11.
James’s one-line answer to McMenamin dodged this question.
However, the rumors about James’ uncertain future in Los Angeles had an impact on the Lakers’ offseason as they missed out on a veteran center, who was among their top free agent targets according to multiple reports.
“Free agent center Brook Lopez, who league sources said had strongly considered the Lakers and the potential starting role, grew wary of the uncertainty around James’ future with the team and opted to sign with the rival LA Clippers, where he will be a backup,” Windhorst and Shelburne wrote.
