The Detroit Lions may have been eliminated from playoff contention with last week’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings, but head coach Dan Campbell isn’t ready to pack it in.
The Lions held only slim hopes for the postseason when they traveled to Minnesota on Christmas Day, and watched those hopes dashed as they struggled on offense in the 23-10 loss. The Lions were eliminated from playoff contention, a result that became even more bitter when the Green Bay Packers lost and left the door open for the Lions to sneak into the postseason had they been able to beat the Vikings.
Despite the disappointing ending, Campbell told reporters this week that he isn’t planning to take out his starters in the season finale against the Chicago Bears.
Dan Campbell Lays Out Gameplan
Campbell told reporters on Monday that he would only rest starters if they had an injury that needed healing, but otherwise he expected all available players to get in the game.
“I think if it’s — we’re sitting there borderline, and the player, it could be hard (to play) or we think they’re setting themselves up for a long-term risk, then no, it’s not worth it,” Campbell said, via the Detroit News. “But if it’s the, stuff doesn’t feel good, it’s bumps and bruises, then no, it’s like the next game up.”
It’s not clear what that means for star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who was knocked out of the loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the final minute and has been nursing knee and ankle injuries.
Campbell also doesn’t want to use the season finale as an audition for next year’s roster, saying he won’t prioritize playing young players over veterans.
“I think if guys can’t go because of injury, then the next guy up will go, young or old — or, young or veteran, I should say,” Campbell said. “Next best guy available.”
Dan Campbell Shoots Down Jared Goff Speculation
Campbell also used a Tuesday radio appearance to quash any lingering rumors that the team could move on from quarterback Jared Goff. Though Goff and the offense struggled against Minnesota — committing six turnovers — Campbell said the team has no plans to move on from Goff after this season.
“Jared Goff is a stud,” Campbell said during his appearance on 97.1 The Ticket. “He’s an absolute stud. We’re fortunate to have him as a quarterback. He’s a winning quarterback in this league. He played at a very high level all season long. He played even better than he played the year before, and he’s continued to play better.
“We’re thankful to have him. I’m thankful to have him. He’s an absolute stud. He’s a pro. He’s going nowhere.”
The Lions had one of the league’s top offenses under Goff in 2023 and 2024, but struggled after the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson following the last season. The Lions will meet again on Sunday with Johnson, who took over as head coach of the Bears and has led them to an 11-5 record.
