Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell may have a future in stand-up comedy after his NFL career is over. While talking to the media about his gruesome mouth injury during a media scrum on Wednesday, Sept. 24, Campbell had all of the interviewers laughing as he detailed a gruesome story in a hilarious manner.
Campbell suffered a mouth laceration during the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game against the Ravens, when he was clipped by a teammates cleat after a play.
The 25-year-old said there was a hole in his lip big enough to put his tongue through after the incident occurred. That didn’t keep him out of the game though, as he got the injury glued up on the sideline and finished the game as he spewed blood on on the field.
When asked about whether the hole in his lip was big enough to stick his tongue through it, Campbell slyly said “yeah, maybe. It was kind of gross. I didn’t do it until I figured out that I could and I was like ‘this is really weird, that probably shouldn’t be that way.’”
Campbell saw a plastic surgeon to get stitches in his lip after the game.
“Probably the first one in the whole Campbell lineage of my family to see a plastic surgeon,” Campbell joked. “They did a good job, they got it fixed.”
Campbell Describes His Reaction to the Injury
Campbell hilariously described both his immediate and postgame reactions to his gnarly cut.
“At first I thought I bit my tongue or the inside of my mouth and then it kept bleeding,” Campbell said. “And then I got over to the sideline and the trainer was like ‘let’s go over to the tent’ and I’m like ‘ehh it’s all good.’ And then I’m in the tent and I felt them pushing the skin together… And then I got in the locker room and I thought it wasn’t even that bad, just a scratch, and then it kind of just opened up.
The third year linebacker showed a tremendous amount of grit by playing through an open wound injury. He finished the game with a sack of Lamar Jackson and a forced fumble.
Campbell has become a stalwart in the Lions defense in the last two seasons, playing in every game of his two-plus year career so far. He had an astounding 131 tackles in the 2024 season while showing effectiveness in both the pass rush and pass defense game.
He already has 26 tackles through three games this season, with one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
Detroit Emerges Victorious in Heavyweight MNF Matchup
The Lions took down Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens 38-30 in a battle between two Super Bowl contending teams on Monday night. Both teams went pound-for-pound through three quarters before Detroit was able to edge the game out in the fourth quarter.
The Lions ground game ran rampant through the Ravens defense for much of the game, as Detroit’s elite running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery combined for 218 yards and four touchdowns.
Detroit’s defense came up with seven sacks on the elusive Jackson in the pocket while forcing two fumbles, one on Derrick Henry in the fourth quarter who fumbled the ball for the third game in a row.
