Lions Star Jameson Williams Just Got in More NFL Trouble

The Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles played each other in an oh-so important game on Sunday, November 16, for “Sunday Night Football” in Philadelphia, and unfortunately, it just wasn’t the best night for the Lions. The game was a slow-moving one, in general, but one of the most explosive moments happened when the Lions scored a touchdown in the second quarter, after a superstar play between quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Jameson Williams.

During the play, Williams showed off his head-spinning speed and caught a pass from Goff to run 40 yards for a touchdown, closing out a three-play, 74-yard drive. After the play, though, Williams jumped onto the stanchion to celebrate. “Jameson Williams did the Antonio Brown touchdown celebration and got flagged for it,” Football Forever noted.

Sure, being pumped about a touchdown is fine, the NFL doesn’t like it when players celebrate too much on the field. So, the Lions were given a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. The penalty cost Detroit 15 yards and it ended up costing them a full touchdown, too, since the extra point wasn’t good. During the game’s windy conditions at Lincoln Financial Field, Lions kicker Jake Bates didn’t make the 48-yard extra point with a kick that went too far right.

Now, Williams is getting into even more trouble for that move. Here’s what the NFL has decided about his fate.

NFL Makes Decision on Jameson Williams of the Detroit Lions

Each Saturday during the season, the NFL hands down punishments to players for actions taken during the previous week’s games. The NFL states on their website that these actions are “to protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity.” They add that the NFL and NFL Players Association agree on the set of game-related rules violations that may result in accountability measures.

The NFL routinely sends out punishments for actions that are deemed unsportsmanlike conduct, and they just did it with Williams. On Saturday, the NFL announced that they’re fining him $14,491 for “use of prop” and “unsportsmanlike conduct.” Just be happy he isn’t being suspended, which really was never a possibility.

At Least the NFL Fine Goes to a Good Cause

According to the NFL, the funds raised from those fines will go to the Professional Athletes Foundation to “support legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.”

Now, Williams and the Lions look ahead to their game on Sunday, Nov. 23, against the New York Giants. The Giants have none of their stars healthy, so this game shouldn’t be close, but this is the NFL, and anything can happen.

In the NFL’s predictions going into Week 12, the league’s reporting team says that “the Lions’ inconsistency this season is a concern.” But, according to their research, “they have top-five units on both sides of the ball, and I trust Dan Campbell to seize this opportunity to get things lined up for the stretch run.”
