Lou Williams Endorses Blockbuster Warriors Trade: ‘I Like This’

Three-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams has urged the Golden State Warriors to go all-in on a trade for Dallas Mavericks big man Anthony Davis.

Speaking on FanDuel TV’s “Run it Back” on Monday, Williams explained why the veteran Warriors — led by Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler III — would be the perfect spot for Davis in the final phase of his career.

“I like this,” Williams said, stressing that both the Warriors and Mavericks have a lot to gain from the move, especially if Jonathan Kuminga is a part of the trade.

“I like this especially for Dallas,” he continued. “You’ve got to get as many young pieces as you can right now, get rid of all the old, and start fresh.”

Potential Flagg – Kuminga Pairing

Williams feels a pairing of 18-year-old rookie Cooper Flagg and 22-year-old Warriors forward Kuminga could usher in a new era for the Mavericks.

“You bring in Kuminga, add him with Cooper Flagg and some other young pieces — I really like this a lot for Dallas,” he said.

As for the Warriors, Williams believes the Steve Kerr-led team is better off parting ways with its young core and instead pursuing a championship led by Curry and Davis.

“The Warriors have shown that the more talent they have, the more they can make a splash in the West,” he said. “Obviously, you put [AD] with Steph Curry, Draymond, and Butler, you give yourself an opportunity to win a lot of basketball games.”

It won’t be an easy task for the Warriors to build a trade package to acquire Davis, who is owed $54.1 million this season. Golden State would essentially have to package Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, and Buddy Hield, along with draft assets and other contracts, which may not be permissible under the NBA’s new CBA.

Warriors Have ‘Daydreamed’ of AD

The chatter of a potential Anthony Davis to Warriors trade began soon after the Mavericks fired GM Nico Harrison, signaling their intention to start anew. According to The San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami, the Warriors have dreamed about acquiring Davis for years, but could be hesitant due to his injury history.

“The Warriors have daydreamed about Davis for years, so anything is possible, especially with Dallas possibly approaching selloff mode,” he wrote.

“But the AD/Warriors moment likely has passed,” he continued. “Davis is an old 32 — often hurt, currently hurt, and Dallas just fired the guy who made the worst trade in recent NBA history to acquire him last season. The Warriors don’t need to add anybody that expensive and that prone to miss a month at any time.”

With Davis (calf) currently sidelined with injury, many have urged the Mavs to hit the reset button and usher in the Cooper Flagg era. Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix reported that the Warriors have internally discussed blowing up the roster.

“As for what’s next, I’m told that Mark Cuban, the Mavs’ minority owner who was exiled from basketball operations by Harrison, is back at the table, ” Mannix wrote.

“I’m also told that radical roster changes have already been discussed by Dallas’s new brain trust. Big changes could be coming to Big D.”
