‘Major Contributor’ Sends 2-Word Message After Joining Texans

The Houston Texans signed veteran cornerback Arthur Maulet in free agency on the eve of training camp. Moreover, the early indications are that he could turn out to be an impactful contributor this coming season.

Maulet, 32, entered the league as an undrafted free agent. He has played for the Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

“HOUSTON WASSAM,” Maulet posted on X on July 21 with a GIF of rapper NBA Youngboy.

“Free agent CB Arthur Maulet tells me he signed a 1-year deal with the Houston Texans. He’s healthy & there for training camp,” NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported on X on July 21. “Maulet had a strong 2023 season as Ravens slot CB & blitzer but limited to 3 games in 2024 due to injuries. Maulet looking to repeat 2023 in Houston.”

The veteran had 37 total tackles, 2 fumbles recovered, 2.0 sacks, and 1 interception in 14 games with the Ravens in 2023. He had a career-best 59 combined stops, with 2.0 sacks, 1 INT, and 1 forced fumble in 2022. That was while he was with the Steelers.

He is coming off a two-year, $4 million contract with the Ravens, and he has earned $7.8 million in his career. Maulet joins a deep and talent-laden Texans secondary.

Maulet said he is “READY TO PROVE IT AGAIN” with the Texans in a follow-up post.

The terms of Mulet’s deal are not yet public, but he figures to face an uphill climb to making the final 53-man roster, given the Texans’ wealth of options at cornerback, and even on the interior at nickelback.

Starters Derek Stingley Jr., a Pro Bowler in 2024, and Kamari Lassiter man the perimeter.

Safety Jalen Pitre is back to occupy the starting nickel job, and the Texans selected USC’s Jaylin Smith in the third round of the 2025 draft.

Additionally, the Texans signed former Las Vegas Raiders first-round pick Damon Arnette and ex-Denver Broncos special teamer Tremon Smith, among others, who will compete for roster spots and, inevitably, playing time.

KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson said Maulet had an “impressive” workout and was a “major contributor.”

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, his staff, and the front office face a tough task.

Safety is clearer, but Calen Bullock and trade pick-up C.J. Gardner-Johnson have the starting spots on lock, likely leaving Maulet on the outside looking in to start Texans training camp.

Texans Secondary Could Have to Make Up for Voids Up Front

Assuming he sticks, Maulet and the Texans’ defensive backs could be lean on this season if teams adjust to their pass rush. ESPN ranked the Texans as having the 13th-best roster in the league and the sixth-best in the AFC.

Their pass rush earned the “biggest strength” label, but their interior D-line was deemed the “biggest weakness.”

That will inevitably put pressure on the back end.

“Biggest strength … was a toss-up between edge and cornerback, but the former gets the nod,” ESPN’s Mike Clay wrote on July 21. “Offensive line was a strong candidate [for biggest weakness], but DT is arguably a larger concern.”

Clay noted that none of the Texans’ defensive tackles recorded more than 31 tackles. They also failed to earn an above-average grade from Pro Football Focus.

The Texans may need Maulet and Co. to hold up in coverage a bit longer if the pressure off the edge fails to get home.
