Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry may not travel with the team on their upcoming three-game road swing following Tuesday’s home matchup against the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, according to ESPN’s Anthony Slater.
Speaking Tuesday on NBA Today, Slater said Curry remains limited to off-court conditioning and has yet to resume basketball activities as he recovers from a thigh contusion and muscle strain suffered last week.
“You may not see him on the road trip,” Slater reported. “That’s still to be determined. I saw him in the weight room the other night. He’s wearing a leg sleeve over that thigh contusion. He’s doing the bike. He’s doing some weight stuff, but he hasn’t been on the court.”
Slater added that Curry is “obsessive” about maintaining his conditioning but remains “a little bit away” from returning.
“He’s keeping his body in as good a condition as possible to get back as quickly as possible,” Slater said. “But he’s still not there yet… And after this road trip, they have a four-day break because they’re not in the NBA Cup. That could be a good use for Steph and a lot of these veterans.”
Curry is scheduled to be reevaluated on Thursday, but Slater’s report suggests the two-time MVP is unlikely to return during the road trip.
Curry’s Injury Timeline Worsens After Collision-Filled Night
Curry’s injury capped a frustrating night last Wednesday when he absorbed three separate blows: banging knees with Alperen Sengun, getting knocked over by Amen Thompson, and limping off the floor in the closing seconds. He finished with 14 points, seven turnovers and increasing discomfort before Warriors trainer Rick Celebrini waved him off the court.
Curry headed straight to the locker room without speaking with reporters.
Slater’s update aligns with the downbeat tone from Andscape’s Marc J. Spears, who said Monday on NBA Today that Curry’s condition did not look promising.
“It’s not good,” Spears said. “He’s going to get reevaluated on Thursday. He’s not doing any on-court work… just getting rehab. Definitely not good.”
Golden State initially expected Curry to miss roughly one week after injuring his quad against the Houston Rockets last Wednesday. However, the Warriors now appear braced for a longer absence pending Thursday’s evaluation.
Warriors Avoid Tear but Still Face Uncertainty
Despite the pessimistic tone surrounding Curry’s timeline, Golden State narrowly avoided a worst-case outcome. An MRI last Thursday revealed a quad contusion and a muscle strain—not a tear.
Golden State coach Steve Kerr acknowledged he “breathed a sigh of relief” after receiving the MRI results.
“It’s a big relief,” Kerr said, via The Athletic’s Nick Friedell. “You always worry when Steph goes down that it’s something that’s going to keep him out for a while. So the fact we’re taking it by the week and it doesn’t appear to be anything too serious is a great sign.”
Curry grimaced on the floor last Wednesday after colliding with Thompson under the basket with 3:24 remaining. Initially ruled an offensive foul on Thompson, the call was overturned to a blocking foul on Curry, who stayed in the game until the final 35 seconds despite the injury worsening.
Warriors Facing Road Trip Without Curry
The Warriors begin their road trip Thursday in Philadelphia — the same day Curry is set for reevaluation. They then travel to Cleveland on Saturday and Chicago on Sunday for a back-to-back.
With Golden State already eliminated from the NBA Cup, the team will receive a critical four-day break after Sunday’s game before hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves on Dec. 12 — a date Slater hinted could be Curry’s realistic return target if rehab progresses smoothly.
