It was an intriguing Sunday in the NFL, and the Bills picked up a crucial victory to stay in the playoff hunt. Buffalo emerged victorious over the Bengals and now boasts a 9-4 record.
Since the Bills aren’t leading the AFC East, with the Patriots holding an 11-2 record, Buffalo is currently in position for a wild-card playoff spot.
Buffalo currently has the first wild card spot, which makes them the 5th seed. Additionally, the Bills received some news on Sunday that could improve their chances of making the playoffs.
Colts’ Quarterback Daniel Jones Suffered a Horrible Injury
Colts quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a severe injury during Indianapolis’ 36-19 defeat against the Jaguars in Jacksonville on Sunday.
Jones appeared to hurt something around his foot, and ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter confirmed on Sunday night that Jones suffered a season-ending torn Achilles.
The Colts are having a fantastic season and currently hold an 8-5 record, which places them in the seventh seed, which is the last wild card spot.
It’s unfortunate to see Jones sidelined by an injury, and with him out for the rest of the season, it could jeopardize the Colts’ chances of making the playoffs.
Indianapolis is currently facing a three-game losing streak, and it’s hard to say how many more losses it might rack up without Jones in the lineup.
If the Colts continue to lose games, they might find themselves sitting at home this coming winter. Although the Bills want to secure the AFC East title, the wild-card route remains a solid option for teams looking to make a playoff run. With Jones injured, it could open up an opportunity for Buffalo to reach the playoffs, especially since it has a challenging stretch ahead in the next few weeks.
The Bills Could Have Room for Error
The Bills are set to head to New England this weekend, followed by a tough matchup against the Eagles in Week 17. Both games will be challenging, and if Buffalo loses either, it may find itself fighting for a playoff spot.
It’s worth noting that Buffalo will also have to travel to Cleveland to face the Browns between the Patriots and Eagles games. Even though the Browns aren’t a good football team with a 3-10 record, they still have a good defense and play a lot better at home.
Cleveland could benefit from playing in a snow game, which could slow down the Bills’ offense.
Although the Bills currently hold a wild-card spot, it doesn’t guarantee they will remain there over the next three weeks. Even though no team wants to make the playoffs because another team’s star player gets injured, it’s just the nature of the sport sometimes.
The Bills might have a little room for error now to drop a game or two with Jones out for the season, and the Colts are likely to fall out of the playoff race.
Buffalo should focus on taking care of business in New England this week, on winning the AFC East, and then use the wild card as the No. 2 option if the Bills don’t have a path to the division title.
