Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate opted for the United youngster as his only change to the starting XI from Tuesday’s drab stalemate with Slovenia.

He came on for Conor Gallagher at half time of that match, and he impressed enough to get the nod for today’s clash.

Mainoo has enjoyed an incredible rise during the last campaign – especially since an injury in pre-season ruled him out until November 26.

Despite United’s troubles, they still managed to end the season with silverware thanks to Mainoo.

The academy graduate scored the winner goal against Man City in the FA Cup Final at Wembley last month.

In the opposition team that day was Phil Foden, a fellow member of England’s Euro squad.

Both Mainoo and the 24-year-old attacker hail from Stockport.

But when he was asked about what his nickname is locally compared to his pal’s, fans were delighted with his response.

An ITV interviewer said: “So it was you and Phil from Stockport.

“They call him the Stockport Iniesta. What do they call you?”

Mainoo wasted no time in delivering his response.

With a huge smile on his face, he simply declared: “Kobbie.”

“This Aura is crazy,” replied one supporter after the footage was shared on X.

Another simply called him a “humble guy” while a fellow fan said: “He is HIM.”

While a fifth added: “That’s all u gonna be remember to. The majestic kobbie!!!”

Meanwhile, Southgate explained exactly why he had chosen the youngster to take on Slovakia before kick off.

He has featured in the games against Serbia and the final group game so far, spending just 50 minutes on the pitch in total.

But Southgate said: “”He used the ball really well.

“We know that the way he plays and he will help us get through their high pressure.

“He’s looked really comfortable in an England shirt.

“He has played some huge games for his club and looks comfortable in our environment.”
