Antony has claimed that problems in his ‘personal life’ was one of the main reasons for his poor form at Manchester United.

The 25-year-old Brazil international has largely flopped since arriving at Old Trafford in a £86m deal from Dutch club Ajax in the summer of 2022.

Antony was recruited by former United boss Erik ten Hag and failed to live up to expectations, registering only 12 goals and five assists in 96 games.

Ruben Amorim – who replaced Ten Hag in November – sent Antony out on loan to Spanish side Real Betis in January for the rest of the season.

Antony has now opened up about his United struggles in a new interview, explaining how issues he faced off the pitch impacted his performances.

The winger was at the centre of domestic abuse allegations in 2023 – both in the United Kingdom and Brazil – with Antony denying any wrongdoing.

In August 2024, the BBC reported that a Brazilian police probe had concluded without any charges being brought – but added that Antony remained the subject of a Greater Manchester Police investigation.

‘I think that, apart from my football life, my personal life got in the way a lot, because of the things I went through, the moments I lived there,’ Antony told ESPN Brasil about his time at United.

‘Like it or not, it’s affected me a lot. So, of course, I know the potential I have.

‘It’s not for nothing that I went to a World Cup, it’s not for nothing that I was sold to United for a lot of money, and I know my worth.

‘People look at the moment, but they don’t look at the bigger picture, what happens to bring things about.

‘So, as I said, my feeling at United was that I had good moments, bad moments too, but of course I could have done more, I could have done better.’

Antony also shared his thoughts on Ten Hag and Amorim, describing the latter as a ‘very good coach’.

‘Erik ten Hag is a coach I’m very grateful to,’ Antony added.

‘He helped me a lot in the Netherlands [at Ajax], and in England too, even though the opportunities didn’t come the way I wanted to.

‘But that’s the coach’s choice, I don’t hold any grudges or anything. On the contrary, I’m very grateful for everything he’s done with me, for all the conversations too.

‘I’ve only had a short time working with [Amorim], but he’s a very good coach. A very intelligent coach.

‘United are going through a difficult time at the moment, but he’s a good coach. I had a good relationship with him, but I needed a new challenge and I wish him all the luck in the world in this final stretch of the season.’
