Manchester United have made a transfer U-turn over their defender Harry Maguire ahead of the January window, according to reports.

It was previously said that Ruben Amorim was ‘planning for life’ without Maguire, who is currently free to negotiate with other clubs come January.

Maguire, who has attracted interest from two Saudi Pro League clubs, cost United £80m when they signed him from Leicester City back in 2019.

The Englishman is out of contract in June but United are now in talks with the 32-year-old over a fresh deal, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims.

It’s thought that United had a face-to-face meeting with Maguire’s representatives in recent days and discussions are set to continue.

United are believed to be happy with Maguire’s ‘contribution’ and ‘leadership’ with the club hoping to keep him at Old Trafford.

Maguire reportedly has no desire to leave United and wishes to spend the rest of his career with the Red Devils.

The centre-back, who has made 253 appearances for United to date, wants to emulate the likes of Denis Irwin and Steve Bruce.

Maguire used to be United’s skipper but was stripped of the captaincy by former head coach Erik ten Hag.

He came close to joining West Ham two years ago – but has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence under current United boss Amorim.

Maguire provided an assist in United’s impressive 2-1 Premier League win over Chelsea last month.

Meanwhile, Maguire was put in a six-man leadership group by Amorim ahead of the current 2025-26 campaign.

‘We have a leadership group now,’ Amorim confirmed in August. ‘It’s not just Bruno, it’s not just Harry, it’s six guys now.

‘They are responsible for the group. There are some things that in the last year I had to deal with that.

‘I said to them in this year, you deal with that. Small issues are with you guys. You are responsible. All these small changes, I think it’s helping the group.

‘We have Bruno, we have Licha, we have Harry, we have Diogo, we have Tom and we have Nous. So it’s not just the oldest ones.

‘Nous is in the group because he’s a character that I like. And I try to understand the dynamic of the group and try to reach every space. They are the guys that are responsible to keep everyone in line.’
