Manchester United fans are sweating over the fitness of Matheus Cunha after a ‘training accident’ prevented him from switching on the local Christmas lights.

The Red Devils are looking to extend their unbeaten run to six games on Monday night when they welcome Everton to Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim has a number of injury issues to deal with however, with defender Harry Maguire and striker Benjamin Sesko ruled out.

As a result, Cunha is expected to start up top but that may not be the case anymore after a worrying and unusual update on Saturday evening.

The Brazil international, who signed from Wolves last summer, was due to turn on the Altrincham Christmas lights on Saturday but just a few hours before the event, it was announced that that would no longer be the case.

‘Unfortunately Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons,’ an update from the Visit Altrincham Facebook page read.

‘There’s lots of exciting performances to come including Luzahnn of Livin’ Joy and Sam Aston, winner of Dancing on Ice 2025, who is Chesney in Coronation Street will be switching on the lights!’

Naturally, this news has sparked concern among the United faithful as to Cunha’s condition, especially given his importance to the team.

While he has only scored one goal since his £62.5million transfer to Manchester, the 26-year-old is key to Amorim’s system, helping to get the best out of his fellow forward Bryan Mbeumo.

United are yet to issue an update on the matter, though BBC Sport report that his appearance in Altrincham was not arranged through the club.

Should Cunha and Sesko miss out, Amorim will have a major selection dilemma on his hands, with no natural, senior centre-forwards at his disposal.

Mason Mount has previously operated as a false-nine, while teenager Chido Obi Martin and out of favour Joshua Zirkzee are also options in that position.
