Manchester United have emerged as the joint-favourites to sign a former England striker who is available on a free transfer this summer.

The Red Devils are in need of a new No.9 following a woeful season in front of goal, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scoring just seven Premier League goals between them.

Hojlund has even been linked with a transfer away from Old Trafford having failed to live up to his £72million price tag.

Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyokeres and Hugo Ekitike have been linked with Ruben Amorim’s side but these are expensive options and money is tight following the signing of Matheus Cunha and the expected arrival of Bryan Mbeumo.

Budget alternatives will be under consideration and that is perhaps why United are the bookies favourites to snap up Dominic Calvert-Lewin who will be a free agent after leaving Everton.

On Sunday, Calvert-Lewin announced he would be departing Merseyside after nine ‘remarkable’ years, saying: ‘I’ve made the incredibly difficult decision, together with my family, to begin a new chapter in my career.

‘This isn’t something I chose lightly. Everton has been my home since I was 19 years old. It’s the place that saw potential in me, challenged me to grow, and shaped me both as a footballer and as a man.

‘This choice to move on was not simply about me, it was a decision my family and I spent a long time considering together.

‘We believe it’s the right moment to seek a new challenge and continue growing, but that doesn’t lessen the bond I’ll always have with Everton.’

Calvert-Lewin was one of the deadliest strikers in the Premier League from 2019 to 2021, scoring 36 goals in 80 games across two seasons.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin Everton stats

Appearances: 273

Goals: 71

Assists: 22

He also scored four times in 11 caps for England and was part of the squad that reached the final of Euro 2020.

Injuries have severely limited his impact of late however, finding the back of the net just three times in 26 appearances last season, yet his stock remains high, with United, Chelsea and Newcastle all linked with him last summer.

The Magpies are the joint-favourites to sign the 28-year-old this time around with Leeds and West Ham among the frontrunners.

Arsenal, who were very interested in Calvert-Lewin a few years ago, are in need of a new striker and could also be a potential destination for him.
