Manchester United have been warned that £74m signing Benjamin Sesko is ‘pretty similar’ to Liverpool’s ‘biggest ever transfer mistake’.
Sesko completed a £74m move to Old Trafford earlier in the month after rejecting interest from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United.
The Slovenia international attracted interest from a number of elite clubs after two impressive seasons at RB Leipzig, where he scored 39 goals in 87 appearances.
Sesko made his Premier League debut against Arsenal on Sunday, coming on as a second-half substitute in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat.
The 22-year-old was signed to help solve United’s goalscoring problems and replace Rasmus Hojlund, who has endured a dismal spell in Manchester since his £72m move from Atalanta.

But ex-Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann has warned the Red Devils that Sesko is ‘pretty similar’ to Liverpool flop Darwin Nunez.
Nunez completed a big-money move to Anfield in 2022 but was sold earlier this summer following a largely disappointing spell on Merseyside.

‘I’m not sure if Manchester United fans want to hear it, but I think Benjamin Sesko is a pretty similar player to Darwin Nunez,’ Hamann told CasinoHawks.
‘I think Sesko has got the body, he’s got the height, he’s got the pace. I think he’s got a better touch than Nunez.
‘He’s technically a very gifted player, but he’s a powerful young lad. Nunez is probably the one I would compare him with in recent years.
‘I’d say his finishing is probably a bit better than Nunez, but he’s got to prove it. He did it at times at Leipzig, but he’s really in the spotlight now at Manchester United.

‘Obviously, we’ve also seen that some big names went to Manchester United in the last 10 years as centre-forwards and they didn’t succeed. It won’t be an easy task, but I think he’s capable of doing it.’
The comparison with Nunez comes after Hamann said the ex-Liverpool forward could be the ‘biggest transfer mistake’ the club have ever made.
Nunez signed a six-year contract at Anfield after completing a then club-record transfer worth £85m, but the 26-year-old was sold earlier this month to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.
‘Is Darwin Nunez the biggest transfer mistake in Liverpool’s history? Maybe, it’s just part of the game,’ Hamann told Betting Lounge.
‘When you bring players in, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.
‘People probably thought, myself included, if you bring somebody in for £85m, it guarantees you goals, but looking back it wasn’t money well spent.’
Sesko could make his first Premier League start for Manchester United on Sunday when the Red Devils travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham.
