Manchester United have opened talks over the signing of Hoffenheim forward Maximilian Beier, according to reports in Germany.

Erik ten Hag was keen for United to recruit a new striker to ease the burden on Rasmus Hojlund in the January transfer window but financial restrictions prevented the club from pushing ahead with a move.

Now that United have decided to keep Ten Hag, the Dutchman is still keen for the club to sign a forward this summer alongside a new centre-back and central midfielder.

Beier, meanwhile, has thrived in his first full season in the Bundesliga with 16 goals in 33 appearances for Hoffenheim. Last week, he was named as the German club’s Player of the Season.

The 21-year-old’s performances have also earned him a call-up to Germany’s national team and he is part of the squad for their Euro 2024 campaign which begins against Scotland on Friday evening.

‘I played against him in my first years as Bayern’s Under-17 coach and his qualities were immediately apparent,’ legendary Germany striker Miroslav Klose said of Beier before his Germany call-up.

‘He runs an incredible amount, works for the team and rewards himself with goals. I’m sure Julian Nagelsmann has him on his radar.’

Beier’s displays for Hoffenheim have not escaped the attention of United and according to SportBILD, via SportWitness, the Premier League club have asked the Bundesliga side to put a price on their striker.

The report claims that Hoffenheim are holding out for United to meet his €32.5 million (£27.4m) release clause, which drops down by €2.5m (£2.1m) each year.

United, however, are set to be restricted once again this transfer window with reports claiming that their initial budget for the summer is £35 million.

United are hopeful of increasing that figure by selling Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood and Casemiro.
