The Toronto Maple Leafs have added more depth to their roster, but the team may not be done.
The Maple Leafs still could use another top-six forward, but with training camp opening this month, time is running out for Toronto to address it before the season starts. Yet, the Maple Leafs have been linked to some players, and general manager Brad Treliving said the team is ‘always looking’ to add more talent.
“We’re always looking. I don’t think you ever stop. Whether it happens or not, we’ll see. We’ve got a lot of bodies right now, so we’ll see,” Treliving said to Sportsnet on if the roster is set. “More than likely, unless something changes, we’ll go with what we’ve got and see where it all sorts itself out.”
The Maple Leafs have been linked to trading the likes of Calle Jarnkrok, David Kampf, and Nick Robertson to clear some salary and roster spots. Toronto, meanwhile, has also been linked to signing Jack Roslovic, who could be a top-six forward.
Yet, when or if Treliving will make a move before the season starts is uncertain. But the Maple Leafs’ general manager is keeping his options open.
Maple Leafs GM Says Team is a Work in Progress
Toronto saw Mitch Marner leave this offseason, while the Maple Leafs added more bottom-six players.
The Maple Leafs are a harder team to play against, but Treliving believes the team is a work in progress, as are most NHL teams before camp starts.
“We’ve had some turnover,” Treliving said. “You credit the coaches because we’ve changed our identity a little bit. I thought they did a really good job of building that throughout the year. There’s lots of players that come back, and there’s lots of things that you carry over, but training camp is the time that you start building your team.
“So I think every team’s a bit of a work in progress when you come to camp,” Treliving added. “There’s changes, there’s new players coming, there’s young players, and I’m excited to integrate the new players that we have. But everybody’s sort of finding their role and where they fit.”
The Maple Leafs are coming off another playoff disappointment loss to the Florida Panthers last year. Despite the disappointment, Treliving is a fan of the team he’s built.
“We’re excited about the group we’ve got, but we’ll see what it looks like once we get going and get everybody up to speed and get the new players acclimated to the team, the market, their teammates, and really, where they fit,” Treliving added.
Toronto won the Atlantic Division, but still couldn’t get over the hump in the playoffs.
Maple Leafs Shopping 2 Forwards
Although Toronto could use another top-six forward, the Maple Leafs are looking to trade two forwards.
NHL insider David Pagnotta reported on September 2 that Toronto is still shopping Jarnkrok and Kampf.
“Also on the Leafs, forwards David Kampf and Calle Jarnkrok remain available for trade,” Pagnotta wrote.
The Maple Leafs had been shopping both of them all summer, and as training camp looms, both remain on the trade block.
Toronto opens its 2025-26 NHL season on Oct. 8 against the Montreal Canadiens.
