Maple Leafs Land $49M Star Winger to Replace Marner in Mock Trade

The Toronto Maple Leafs still need a first-line winger to replace Mitch Marner and will likely have to look at the trade market.

Heavy.com proposed a deal that would see the Maple Leafs acquire Troy Terry from the Anaheim Ducks in a blockbuster deal.

The proposed deal would be a blockbuster as Toronto would go all-in to acquire Terry, who’d be a first-line player for their top prospect, and NHL winger, and a second-round pick.

The Maple Leafs would acquire Terry, who has five years left on his seven-year, $49 million deal. Terry is a right winger that Toronto needs, as the Maple Leafs’ first-line right winger last season was Marner, who left this offseason. Terry can play on the top line and add some much-needed offense. He recorded 21 goals and 34 assists for 55 points in 77 games last season with the Ducks.

Toronto would give up Cowan, who is the Maple Leafs’ top prospect. Cowan was selected in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft and could push for NHL playing time. However, Toronto is in a win-now mode, so dealing him makes sense for an impact NHL player. Anaheim, meanwhile, gets a young forward to help its rebuild.

The Maple Leafs would also give up McMann, who may not have a role this season with Toronto. McMann is in the final year of his two-year, $2.7 million deal with the Maple Leafs. McMann recorded 20 goals and 14 assists for 34 points last season, but he didn’t score a goal in the playoffs, leaving his role with Toronto in the air.

Cowan Hopeful to Crack Maple Leafs Roster

Cowan has aged out of the OHL and will either be in the NHL or AHL this season, and the goal is for him to make the Maple Leafs roster.

The 20-year-old nearly made Toronto as an 18-year-old but had a bad training camp last year. This year, Cowan’s OHL coach, Dale Hunter, expects the offensive winger to make a real push to be in the Opening Night lineup.

“He’s going to push to make the team and play well for the Leafs,” Hunter said about Cowan on The Fan Morning Show. “Every organization needs young guys pushing to make the team, and it will make the Leafs better. And he’s going to make it. So, that’s a good thing for the Leafs.”

Playing in the NHL won’t be easy for Cowan, but Hunter believes he’s gotten bigger and stronger to make the transition easier.

“It’s the best league in the world, and you’ve got to be physically ready for it because there are big guys in the National Hockey League,” Hunter said. “It’s 80-plus games and it’s a grind in there, and you just got to be ready every night to perform, be consistent, and that’s what the NHL guys are looking for.”

Cowan helped the London Knights win the Memorial Cup last season.

Ducks Put Terry on Trade Block

Although Terry is one of the best offensive players on the Ducks, his name has come up in trade rumors.

In the offseason, NHL insider Andy Strickland reported earlier this offseason that the Ducks reportedly made Terry available in trade talks.

“Hear Troy Terry is available from Anaheim,” Strickland wrote.

Terry was selected 148th overall in 2015, but has been an impactful offensive player. He’s a two-time NHL All-Star and has 285 career points in 427 games.

Maple Leafs Looking to Bolster Offense

Terry fits the Maple Leafs well as he’d fill the need.

Toronto saw Marner leave this offseason, and the Maple Leafs have yet to replace him, which is a goal according to GM Brad Treliving.

“When a player of Mitch’s magnitude moves away, that’s never a fun day… In a situation where a player was walking away this morning for nothing, we were able to recoup a player that fits a need for us… Mitch was a top-six forward, and we haven’t replaced that hole,” Treliving said on July 1. “That’s really where our focus is.”

The Maple Leafs could start either Max Domi or Mattias Maccelli as the first-line right winger right now.
