The Toronto Maple Leafs have had themselves a pretty busy summer. They have added multiple new players, like Matias Maccelli, Nicolas Roy, and Dakota Joshua. However, they lost a huge part of their core, as Mitch Marner is no longer with the team.
Yet, as busy an offseason as the Maple Leafs have had, there is a real chance that they are not done yet.
In his latest column for The Fourth Period, David Pagnotta reported that the Maple Leafs are shopping forwards David Kampf and Calle Jarnkrok with the 2025-26 season almost here.
“Also on the Leafs, forwards David Kampf and Calle Jarnkrok remain available for trade,” Pagnotta reported.
With this report, it is clear that the Maple Leafs are a team to watch closely, as NHL training camps are soon to begin.
Why Maple Leafs Shopping Kampf & Jarnkrok Makes Sense
When looking at the Maple Leafs’ roster, it is easy to understand why they are shopping Kampf and Jarnkrok. They currently have a surplus of bottom-six forwards, and neither player necessarily has a guaranteed spot in their projected lineup because of it.
The Maple Leafs also do not currently have much cap space. According to PuckPedia, they have under $2 million of cap space. This is far from ideal for the Maple Leafs, as they still could use a legitimate top-six forward to replace Marner.
Kampf currently has a $2.4 million cap hit until the end of the 2026-27 season. Jarnkrok, on the other hand, has a $2.1 million cap hit until the end of this upcoming campaign. Given their current roles and the Maple Leafs’ money situation, their cap hits are pretty high. Thus, finding a way to trade either Kampf or Jarnkrok would be significant for the Maple Leafs.
Why Kampf & Jarnkrok Could Generate Trade Interest
While Kampf and Jarnkrok may no longer be great fits on the Maple Leafs, they certainly could generate interest from other teams. This is especially so if clubs are looking to upgrade their bottom six.
Kampf appeared in 59 games this past season for the Maple Leafs, where he posted five goals, 13 points, and 50 hits. While he may not provide the most offense, he can make a real impact due to his strong defensive play. Because of this, he works well on the penalty kill, so he could help another team in this area.
Furthermore, Kampf has also been very good at the faceoff dot throughout his career. The 30-year-old has won more than half of his faceoffs in seven out of his eight NHL seasons. This includes this past season, as he had a faceoff winning percentage of 51.2.
Jarnkrok, on the other hand, posted one goal and seven points in 19 games last season for Toronto. He spent most of the year injured, but when healthy, he provides solid secondary offensive production. The veteran forward has recorded at least 30 points six times in his career. This includes in 2022-23, when he set career highs with 20 goals and 39 points in 73 games with Toronto.
Jarnkrok’s versatility also adds to his appeal, as he can play all three forward positions. Due to this, he would have the potential to be a nice addition for a team looking for a player who works anywhere in the lineup.
