Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Easton Cowan recently shared his excitement after scoring his 1st NHL goal. The milestone came during the Maple Leafs’ impressive 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Cowan’s milestone arrived at a crucial time. The Leafs had struggled to find consistency early this season.
Cowan’s 1st NHL goal could provide the spark the team needs to regain confidence and momentum. He has faced uncertainty while trying to establish a permanent roster spot.
During his post-game interview with host Ryan Leslie for the Leafs’ social media accounts, Cowan reflected on his milestone goal. The rookie acknowledged the team effort that led to the goal and acknowledged Leafs center John Tavares for his assist.
“It just felt like good defense led to offense there. I mean, how I help my guy off on the draw. We got it out, good forechecking by Bobby [McMann] and [Tavares],” Cowan said. “What a spin pass by John. That’s what make him so good, it’s his hockey sense.”
He continued:
“What a great play. And yeah, [I] just shot it, picked my spot, and it went in. So it felt good for sure.”
Easton Cowan Praises John Tavares After Assisting His 1st NHL Goal
Easton Cowan also praised John Tavares for the impact he has on his career so far. He expressed gratitude for the former Maple Leafs captain’s wisdom and guidance since being drafted.
Cowan was selected 28th overall by the Leafs in the 2023 NHL Draft. Now in his rookie season, he seems to have found a great mentor in Tavares.
While reflecting on his 1st NHL goal, Cowan recalled Tavares’ pure joy and excitement. He said it meant a lot coming from him, considering what he has accomplished in the league.
“Super cool [moment]. I mean, [Tavares has] done it 500 times. So, to see him that excited for a goal was definitely special,” Cowan told Leslie. “Like I’ve been saying since I met him, what a great player and just an even better human being.”
He added:
“I’ve learned so much from him and honestly, I’ve only known him for two years but I probably wouldn’t be here without him.”
Maple Leafs Announcer Joe Bowen Weighs In on Cowan’s Growth
Longtime Maple Leafs play-by-play announcer Joe Bowen recently shared his thoughts on Cowan’s progress. He said the rookie forward continued to gain confidence and grow more comfortable with every game.
Bowen noted that young player like Cowan often need more time to adjust to the speed of the NHL.
“You can definitely see the artistry and the intelligence, and the creativity that [Cowan] displayed while playing junior hockey in London,” Bowen told Leafs Morning Take. “It’s only a matter of time. I think he is another perfect example of what I was talking about [earlier], thinking too much instead of just reacting and going with his God-given talent.”
He continued:
“Sometimes to get a player to be a little more selfish, for the lack of a better term, in those situations, takes a little bit more experience.”
